I am about to try to set my own pump timing and was curious if the pump will possibly move when i pull the gear and if it does what is the best way to move JUST the pump back to the spec im trying to achieve. Do i have to put the gear back on and turn the engine or... . ? This is goin to be my first attempt so any help or suggestions will be helpfull. I have all the tools, dial indicator specs, etc.

Has any one ever pulled the pump off and notched out the 4 hold down bolt holes to adjust the pump by turning it instead? i used to turn the stanadyne pumps to fine tune the older GMC's I know there wouldnt be much room to turn it but alittle may make a difference.

pump timing

Set your pump to the desired spec first. Loosen the gear from pump and put your crankshaft back to TDC. Be sure to get the backlash out fo the gears before you tighten the nut on the pump back down. hope this helps.

PThomas,

The 215 HP pumps are much more prone to jumping time when the gear pops off the shaft.

If it does jump, no big deal. You simply tighten the gear back on the shaft and rotate the engine some more until you get her back to the correct lift spec. Then you pull the gear again and hope for the best.

But this is what I do. On my 215 pump the pump rotates EVERY SINGLE time I pull the gear. So what I've been doing lately is this. Go ahead and pull the gear before you do anything. The first time it pops off, it is quite violent. Then push the gear back on the shaft and tighten the nut just enough that when you rotate the motor the gear turns the pump shaft and doesn't just slip. I'll guess it's about 10-20 ft lbs. Then set your lift spec. This time when you pull the gear, it will just glide off and the timing won't budge.

I hope this makes sense.

thanks

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the REAL deal on setting this 215 pump. I had a feeling it would rotate after i pulled the gear, and wasnt sure of the best way re-set the plunger spec. your way seem's to make sense. Are those 215 pumps hard to turn by hand? Do they hold fuel pressure in the lines after shut down?

I was wondering about going thru the gov. housing and finding a secure place to turn it. maby the gov flyweight assy (IF its not too hard to turn).

wouldnt it be nice if there was a shallow allen wrench hole in the nose of the pump shaft to turn it? anyway thanks again !

There's no way you could turn the pump by hand. And don't try to pry on anything in the governor housing to turn it.

I have a spare pump in my shop that I can take apart and tinker with. Even with no fuel in it, you can't turn it by hand.

Do you have the barring tool to rotate the engine?

Good luck, it isn't too hard.
