As I mentioned in a previous thread, I just this week traded in my 08 5500 C&C for a 2012 Laramie 3500 dually. On the 08, the dealership was able to "turn on" high idle. Do the 2012's have this feature?

Joe

The engine will automatically idle up to 1000 RPM after 2 minutes of idling if it's cold enough outside and your coolant temperature is below 180F. It also has an idle-up feature that you can set using the cruise control... nothing the dealer has to set for you.

What caused you to trade the Ram 5500? Did you grow tired of the stiff unloaded ride?

Hello Mr. Barlow,

Yes, we did tire of the buckboard like ride when not towing. We lived with it for 2+ years before I started looking for a new ride. I should have listened to you and many others before purchasing the 5500. It would have saved me some money.

So far, we LOVE this new 3500!! Very comfortable and able to tow 19,550 lbs. With our new trailer maxing at 18,000, we have a nice cushion. This baby rides like a Cadillac.

Thanks Patty, that's good to know.

Joe,

I regret you had that expensive experience. As I have written several times, I wanted and planned to buy a Ram 4500 but was afraid it would ride too rough as a daily driver and I would eventually hate it.

A Ram 4500, if devoted to hauling a heavy slide in camper or pulling a heavy fifthwheel, makes a great tow or hauling truck. I use my Ram 3500 as a daily driver and although a little stiffer than a pickup, it rides pretty well. Well, I did until I bought a Goldwing, but I don't drive it much now.

the 5500 had 52,000 miles on it when we traded it in. We replaced the front tires at 45,000 miles with Goodyear 625's. That is a highway tire rather than a 4x4 tire. It improved the ride immensely, but the bumps were still jarring. Like I said, we are happy with the 3500 and as a matter of fact, Debbie took 4 other ladies to the local indian casino tonight for bingo. That was another reason for trading. We wanted a vehicle we could take other in for dinner and trips. The 5500 was just too tall and rough.

Yes but only if you have the automatic. Dodge will not enable this feature if you have a manual transmission.

Kevin

If the dealer will not enable the high idle feature will the Smarty turn it on? I may have an opportunity to grab a 2011 six speed and would like the feature enabled if I decide on the truck.

The high idle is no longer available with the manual transmission.
The dealer spent a couple of hours trying to enable it on my '10. They finally called Star and were told it was not available any more for the manual transmissions.
I don't know about the C&C's.

Good point!

I would bet it IS available for cab and chassis trucks because they have pto capability and would need to idle up for pto operation.

Guess I would have to come with my own creation on the high idle. What about cold weather features will they idle up like my second gen. does?

Hmmm. Good question. I'd like to say they will but perhaps not for the same reason the manual fast idle is not programmed.

Harvey,

I know my second gen will step up when it's cold enough, just was curious about the 4th gen doing it.

The 4th gens will idle up on there own if its cold enough, and if the coolant is cold enough, and the vehicle is not moving, and its been sitting long enough.
