95 12 valve, with a Dr performance upgrade> Just turn over 235,000 Kms. Lately I am getting black smoke from the exhaust, noticably worse at lower rpm's. The performance seems OK, I can still peg the boost gauge at 30 psi. I changed the head a while back, don't think the two are related but ??

What is all included in this ''dr performance upgrade''? Any time you mod the truck for more power you have to add more fuel. The black smoke is just soot, it happens more at lower RPM's because the turbo doesn't spool up as quick. It's perfectly normal.

Upgrade included a change of injectors as well as reworking the pump. I should mention that the engine upgrade was done at 60,000 kms and the smoking problem has been nonexistant untill resently.

DEddie, even though you're still getting 30psi boost it could be you have a boost leak. Check all your band clamps starting at the turbo, in and out of the intercooler, and going to the air intake. These tend to work loose over time. Snug 'em up but don't go crazy torquing them down. If that doesn't help then let us know.

As mentioned check for a boost leak. You might consider a different gauge that reads to 60psi since you say you are pegging the 30 psi one you have now.

Other common problem is check for a vacuum leak. This sounds like the problem to me.

I have checked the intercooler boot clamps,. . all is well. I also made up an adapter and charged the inercooler with 10 psi pressure, there is a leak on the inside bottom corner, showed up right away when I covered the outside with soapy water. How much affect will a leaky intercooler have? and what is the fix, can they be repaired??
