Despite you're appearant lack of empathy here

I did not say a lack of empathy. I asked my aunt how she was doing in TX as they have a windmill pumping their water. I also asked my buddy how his family was doing in Texas.

I am saying that Texas is being targeted by the media mob and singled out for not being part of the feds on their grid. Other places were hit as well including Mexico. Yeah, I feel bad for everyone and the expensive damage done to pipes etc. Texas isn't doing anything "bad" that makes them deserve the Special Nasty Treatment compared to other places I already pointed out. The rare storm for the area is news.

Now I will say people had better figure out how to deal with lack of electric power... Discussions on FB are already going on about it from this storm. The bad news is others already figured some of it out so good luck getting a home standby generator as they have been in very short supply awhile now. For reference a turnkey 20KW home standby generator is around $15,000.00 installed. Less if you have NG and don't have to get propane tanks.

If you want to call me "Numb" to power outages it's because they are simply SSDD to me anymore. I already have several years worth of power bills laid out in generators just to run 14 hours or more a year in AZ. My major heartburn is if the sandstorm before the storm will sandblast the insulation off the generator's windings ruining it. (My California experience wore a generator out. CA is especially bad...)

I probably missed this. But didnt the storm just happen maybe a week or so ago ? How did that guy get a bill so soon ? Especially as big as it is ?

I have no idea how he or others found out so quickly and yes it was just Friday when the second storm event was over... I guess we'll have to see how it plays out. Although just because the news reports it, it doesn't mean it's true, however, there has to be some credibiltiy in that it's part of the state and possibly national investigation. I haven't seen reports for CPS, but the CEO came on the news in general terms talking about the long term cost AND it has been reported today on the local news that CPS has requested a waiver for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for 7 days while they assess and compile the facts before going into any more details. Again, I'm pretty sure you'll see this on the news as it escalates.

I guess I didn't catch your intent of commenting why TX is so special and the tone of your post. Sorry for your bad experiences with generators and power outages.

I've had a 25KW diesel genset for the past 4 years or so, not so much that I needed it, I just got it for $2,000 installed, fueled, and maintained by my BIL. I never lost power once through the whole week, not even blinked and since I've had the genset, it has only about 4 hours of true outage time on it. The rest is monthly runup and load testing.

So, I'm good and hope you are too.

Cheers, Ron

I havent believed news reports for over 50 years. I find it hard to believe that someone got a legitimate bill for $10k. But clerical errors happen, and the "news" will sensationalize it. Ill be following this one, just really curious. I havent heard yet from my niece who lives in Houston.

From what I’ve seen, the company has an app that shows your balance due live.

Is power not regulated in Texas ?

No it's not regulated AND in order to keep full control of it, its not interconnected with other states. The shiney side of the coin is rates are typically low with our normal climate. I hope the fix is some procedures, add reserves, and surge caps... I like ice cream with my cake.:D

From what it sounds like, the low rates have been erased for the last 20 years or more.

Could be. It may end up being the cost of doing business... Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joked to the affect he made a killing on the winter storm, being heavily invested or part owner in a natural gas company. I guess in the end, there may be a determination whether 10K% to 15K% increases during a natural disaster is ethical. We'll see.

In the meantime, the normal TX winter is back, upper 60s last Saturday, mid 70s Sunday, and 77 yesterday. For my part, I'd be just as happy to never have snow again, and likely won't for another 10 years.

Cheers, Ron

Just like how #46 killed the pipeline on his first week, and now resuming all the agenda #44 was putting into place, and the advent of this horrible winter, I’m afraid we’re all in for a really tough row to hoe.
We didn’t even feel the effects of the energy disruption from the oil fields of Texas yet. In my area, diesel has shot up over .25 in the last month, and now the news that the “damage” from this season will cost “us” for the next decade or more?

Wayne will be taking some time off. He has been around a long time and knows politics stay in the political section.

Folks, please keep the politics in the politics section.

Here's what I dont understand, and maybe someone can enlighten me.
I know it gets really hot in Texas in the summer. Why don't these huge price increases happen then ? I just can't believe that most people don't run their air conditioners all summer.

There are power plants that only come on line in the summer. Some genius, somewhere, either didn't listen to the weatherman or it just takes longer than a couple weeks to get them operational.
