My new 04. 5 on order hopefully is on its way but I was just curious about the brakes. On my previous 7 CTD equipped trucks the front brakes, and front end in general, drove me nuts. Do the front brakes last longer? Is the rear disc setup proportioned well(basically do the rear brakes help, at all, with stopping the truck)

When I only had to replace the factory rear brakes every 150,000 miles I see that as a proportioning problem.

Is the front brake setup big enough to handle the weight of the CTD on the new trucks??----- cause they definitely weren't in previous years(or, at least, pre-3rd gen)

I just hope to get more than 20,000 miles out of the fronts.

Please, oh please, tell me they are better.

I agree that previous generation trucks had horrible front brakes. I too had to replace at 16k, while the rears were never replaced for the entire 6½ years I owned it. My new 04½ with the 600 feel alot better when stopping. These new trucks have the biggest brakes of any diesel truck. I can feel the rears grab when coming to a hard stop also, never could with my previous truck. I think you'll be happy with them, a dramatic improvement over the old ones.

It completely amazes me how this nearly 7,000lb truck can stop on a dime and leave 9 cents change.

Even under hard braking with the ABS making all kinds of racket, this thing is very stable and stops quickly.

I have just over 16,000 miles on my truck and I have tons of pad left.

Brakes in the 3rd gen trucks are awsome, 14" rotors and huge calipers, I have a couple pictures in my reader rig gallery with the wheels off.

Early this morning on my way to Lander I had to "apply" the brakes to avoid three deers. Over by Dubois, of course.

Afterwards I mulled over how happy I am with the disk brakes and the stopping abilities. I noted a big improvement with my 02 over the 98.

I use the exhaust brake a lot and do very little city driving, so I've never had to change any pads with 85K on 98, 55 on 02, and 14 on 04.
