I need to replace the mirror..... when I've done this in the past - on other vehicles you often break the plastic snaps (or whatever you call them)--is there a way to avoid that?

You only need to pop the three fasteners nearest the mirror - no need to remove the entire panel. The Ram fasteners tend to get deformed rather than break. You will probably be able to reuse them.

I have had to take my 01 door panels off several times. To put in speakers, sound deadening, replace mirrors etc. I too was tired of breaking those darn xmas tree fasteners so I bought one of those removal tools. Well it worked to a certain degree. I didnt break or distort as many as without the tool but still some broke or got severely distorted. I would just go to napa or wherever else that has them and get some so you have some replacements. If I recall napa sells them for like 5 bucks a bag. One thing that might help is I have noticed that the warmer it is the easier or less that break. I did it once when it was fairly cool and instead of the fasteners coming out it broke a couple of the fastner mounts. Fortunately for me it was the bottom ones on the quad cab doors and I just screwed that part of the darn panel into the door to keep it from rattleing.
