Thanks everyone for the heads up on the KDP. I have a 98. 5 that has had practically all of the engine and transmission problems that have been reported therefore I don't doubt my dowel pin should be repaired before it becomes a bigger problem.

I don't wrench so I will need to have it repaired. Is this a fix that the dealership mechanics are familiar with? Any thought about the cost?

98. 5 2500 quad-cab

the dealerships only like to fix AFTER the pin falls out and the serious damage is done. i told a local guy, non tdr member about this and told him i'd arrange to have harold do the kdp retention. well the guy lost my cell # and got to worrying about the kdp so he went to the local dlr. they did nothing but remove the cover and atempt to remove the pin w/ pliers. of crse they cldnt get a grip on it and gave up and charged the guy an astronomical fee that the guy wldnt even admit to me the amount. a year or more after the guy found a way to get a hold of me and i arranged for harold to fix it correctly. this pin had moved out a bit so harold massaged it back into place and tabbed it. harold also had to fix some of the dealers 'mess ups' on this truck which were many.

avoid the dlr what ever ya do.

too bad ya aint in idaho.

consult a tdr cummins nut in your area that can either wrench or advise ya to an individual or trustworthy shop that has expierience with this. there are some good guys who are tdr members scattered around.

good luck Oo.

My truck build date was 10/98, pulled the front cover and mine had the stepped case. Still staked it and put some loctite in the KDP hole for good measure.

I did check torque on the case bolts. None of them were loose, they took a fraction of a turn to reach torque specs. I figured that wasn't too bad after 210k. No loctite though.

Like what was said before there is no logical reasoning on how to tell if you have the dreaded dowl or not.

Myself in the shop I have seen one on an '02. Now even though I have have only seen one 02 with it I have seen 3 '01's with the thing. Best thing is too just check your own then you will know. Besides it is probably time to change the front seal anyway. The job over all takes us about an hour to do, it is not hard. But again the years vary and the best way to know if you have it or not is to look.

Well... I'm going to do mine... as I posted previously... Holiday cheer got in the way... but I'm gonna do it. Could someone please give me the part numbers I need for seals. Front cover? Front seal or... what ever I need so I can call Cummins West in Redding California and place a clean 1 shot order?

Thank You

William

Ok I am a little scared now. Guess I should check mine as well after seeing an 02 down for the count. Better safe than sorry.

Anyone out there have this info. I would like to get all the parts in one shot too. Thanks

on the 24 valve engines all you will need is a front seal(N. A. P. A. part #24868) and possibly a tab. the 24 valve engines didn't use a gasket on the cover. just grey silicone sealer. you might have a revised case. the only way to tell is to take the cover off and look. the case is 1/2 in thick and stepped if you have the revised case. ( the dowel pin hole) if you have the old style case the dowel pin hole is only 1/4 in thick. hope that helps. Harold

Steve, You need to fill out your Signature block so we know were you are & what truck you have. It's under User Control Panel, on the "Discussion Forums tab".

No, I can not recommend that you have the dealer do this job. If you can't find a local TDR group to help you out, then find a Diesel Truck Hotrod shop in your area. Moose  ( I need to do this someday soon )

What are the torque specs for the case bolts? What color loctite should I use on them? I was going to order a kit from TST for around 50 bones.

when you get the kit from tst it will have all the torque specs and what bolts have to be removed and cleaned out and reloc-tited. the tst is pretty sraight forward good directions and good reference pictures :D :D :D :D :D

late post on KDP

I have an 01 HO. Got a KDP kit from tst. Turns out I have the stepped case, tadded the pin then checked case bolts. One of them was finger tight. Cleaned and loc-tite them. Kit from TST is great. Also cleaned rad. and front of engine. It is worth it to check the KDP
