Hey, how often are you guys cleaning your oiled filters? I've got the AFE super stock drop-in filter, and I did a search on the forum but didn't find anything helpful. I know it's not good to clean them too often, and i've heard that they even protect better when they get a little dirty with some mileage on them. So how often do you guys clean yours?

Thanks

Eric

Probably overkill, but I do mine every time I change oil and fuel filter at 3k miles. Sometimes I get lazy and if it doesn't look too bad, I will skip and do it next time.

Here recently though, we have had some major, major dust storms. If I drive much in the storms, I will clean it every couple of weeks. It doesn't take much to get it dirty when you are driving in blowing dust where visibility is only a hundred feet at best.

Mine is the "Air Raid" drop in reusable. I give up playing with all the fancy expensive filter cleaners and reconditioners. I put in the laundry tub and soak it in hot soapy water for a while, swish it around alot to get the black crap out of it, rinse it well then let it drip dry for a few days either by the wood stove or out in the sun depending on season.

I then spray it evenly with gun oil to recondition it.

Works for me thus far. This filter is 4 yrs old and it tends to draw on the filter minder more in its old age. I think the filter material is getting matted from age and cleanings. Probably time for a new one. I keep a factory filter on hand for cleaning time.

7. 000 miles running PBC oil tested at BLACKSTONE LAB. they said i could go to 9. 000 if i wanted to. Oil tested out very good life left in the oil.

aFe Mega Cannon Stage 1 with Outerwear pre-filter has never been re-oiled in over 200K of pavement driving. I wash the pre-filter about twice a year. The media in the aFe has no build-up of any kind. The color of the first Mega's was a lighter yellow, which has turned darker. You guys must run in some amazing dusty environments.....

I'd like to use a pre-filter, but since mine drops in place of the stock filter I don't think I can. It looks like there's alot of variation in cleaning intervals between you guys. I have one dirt road where I live, but other than that it's pavement all the time. I wouldn't say it's overly dusty here in central Texas. I guess there's alot of debate about what the best cleaning interval is, but I had always heard that the oiled filters protect better when they start to get a bit dirty. It looks like GaryOwen who posted above has got over half a million miles on his rig and cleans his every 40-50k.
