How to cool it down?

Just got my truck back today after having a set of 230 hp injectors installed, and the pump timing checked (it was dead on exact, FWIW).

I still have the Lance camper on it, so I can't say just how much stronger it is, but it IS stronger. Since I went from 180's to 230's, I'd say that 50 hp is likely.

The problem now, is that my EGTs are up higher, which I more or less expected. Not too awful, maybe 150 deg, but that's still significant. Now it's time to figure out how to best get them back down. Here's what's been done in that regard so far:

- Walker diesel muffler
- 16mc2 turbo housing
- "Scotty" monster K&N air filter

I have a PacBrake, so I wonder if a 4" exhaust is really worthwhile. The truck still has the cat, so I'll be ramming a pipe through it once I get back to Kalifornia and can get with a friend who welds. I suppose I could lose the muffler entirely, but I don't know if it might end up being too loud. We might try it and see.

How much would the HX-40 turbo help? It'd have to be a lot to be worth the cost of the upgrade. I do NOT plan on doing the RPM spring kit, FWIW. After speaking at length with a mechanic at the shop that did the work, I'm convinced it's not a great idea. Besides, I'm now at the point where I'm pretty happy with the power the truck makes; I just wanna keep the exhaust cool enough to be able to USE it.

How much does a ported head cost? That might be worthwhile too, but I expect it'll cost at least what an HX-40 will, if not 2x that.

I understand the Psyscotty air upgrade will help with the temps. It draws air from a pretty cool location above the firewall and makes alot of turbo whissstle if you remove the silencer ring in the turbo. I can't tell you how much the drop in egt's will be because I put it on before guages. Try a search and i'm sure you will find guys that are claiming over 100 degree drop in their egt's with the psyscotty.

Did you do a cummins uprate or aftermarket cam plate kit?

RobG, <font color=blue> Between loosing my Cat and the Psycotty system I saw 250 deg drop in EGT. The Psycotty is worth 150 deg by itself. My cat had 70K on it and about 50K of this was with the TST #12 230/605 kit. Going with the Psycotty system allowed me to move my #11 280/685 TST plate all the way forward and still be able to tow my house trailer(old, heavy 24' Great Divide) and stay under 1200 deg running 70 up almost every hill I have come a crossed. I say loose the cat's insides, get a strait threw muffler and a Psycotty air filter system!!!!</font>

Rob,I agree with drawson 100%The Psycotty is well worth it,don't be afraid of that 4 1/2" hole. You didn't say how many miles you have on the cat,but if it's over 50K lose it right away.

I am ordering one up as soon as he says the next production run is ready. He has sold over 300 units and told me that there have only been 3 complaints of the noise levels, which I think is impressive.

Dittos on the Psycotty. It is good for about a 150 degree drop in EGTs.

Remember that post, something like 'Sorry Scotty'? Wasn't that a hose between the stock air filter & the firewall? Someone even used a section of RV Sewer hose. Those BOMBers were lowering EGT that way. I'd guess one should block off the stock air intake & just use the firewall tap.

I stopped & got a sewer hose one off the road side. #ad
