How to visit NYC

We are making plans for this summers vacation. Penny has always wanted to see NYC, what's the safest way?

Take the trains into the city and use the subway? or would that be like hanging a sign around our necks that reads " Kick My AXX Please"

I drove in the City ONE TIME back in the Mid 70's I swore that if I ever got out in one piece that I wouldn't ever do that again. Taxi Cabs seem a bit iffy, Habibe the Cab driver might not like the looks of me that day.

I knew you guys would have to come east at some point. Is this a MH trip, or flying etc? This determines where your base would be.

We visited NY last year and took the train in from Phili where we were staying.

NY is a absolute zoo. I do not see driving your personal vehicle being very efficient as a tourist. You would spend 80% of your time looking for a place to park instead of looking at things. The subway system is very efficient way of moving around and while I wouldn't want to be down there late at night during the day it is perfectly safe.

We'd be driving the MH on a trip East, I knew about the driving being a nightmare and FOR SURE not a place for the MH but will have the trailer & Tacoma. Don't know exactly what direction we'd becoming in from yet. Looking at other places and routes, most likely will be going North into NY.

Many hotels in Jersey offer daily bus/shuttle service in and out of NYC for registered guests.. That's what I will do the next time that we go.

Big, look for a campground on the east side of the Hudson just north. Here you can tie up and take the metro north commuter train into penn station or Grand central. How's your walking ability these days?

I can walk and RUN IF I HAVE A NEED TO!! I was hoping to catch a ride with one of the mounted Police like Crocodile Dundee did when he visited

I definitely want to park out of the city and take public trans or like Mike suggested on a tour bus that lets you off. We are kind of independent and like a more self guided tour. We would like to see some theater while on the trip and im trying to make it where we can go to a ball game where ever we are.

Just wasn't sure about the trains and subways, not use to that kind of scenario. Even when we lived in So Calif if you didn't have a car you were screwed, NY is the opposite.

We haven't done it in a few years, but we always take the train in when we go to the city. From our place here, the train ends up at Penn station. It is as easy as can be.

Yes. Keystone and Pennsylvanian. One is train 42 and the other is 43.

Stay as far away from New Jersey if you have anything resembling a weapon, and NY with even a cartridge or empty brass. Last time I was in NYC was in the '60s. I didn't much care for it. You will know what herded cattle feel like, they eat standing up in many places, regular coffee is with cream and sugar, you can walk across the street on the yellow cabs, and it stinks. The place has to be much worse not. Other than that....have fun and carry a lot of hand sanitizer.

I have to make sure to roll a couple of "Fat Ones" for this part of the trip

I'm sure that we will survive, it can't possibly be any worse than South Central LA!!

Use the public transit system like others have said.
Camping can be good about an hour west of the city.
Robin Hill in Pennsylvania was nice last I was there. Caebelas is close by.
1 Dont even think of carrying a weapon.
2 If you dont see cops, get outta there.
3 Parking a motorhome will be an education.

stay in jersey & take the path train in to the city, after that take the subway any where you want to go.

I was in the USCG stationed on Governor's Island in 1978-1979. Used public transportation all over the city. Not sure where the problem areas are now - then it was the South Bronx and Bedford-Stuyvesant. We were bunked four to a room - two in the room were Black, two were White. Went to church on Sunday in Harlem for a year and a half. Most amazing gospel music I ever heard ( I sound like a croaking frog when I sing - really admire those who can make a joyful noise ). I never had a problem of any type, and met all kinds of nice people.

Have taken the family to NYC as well as D.C.. Studied the subway map and took the train in from far out. We stayed up the Hudson on our NYC trip.

I suggest avoiding the obvious tourist trap places (e. g., Times Square). Although, for sure take the Staten Island Ferry. Can't see why you would not have a great time.

NYC is in flux right now. Starting in the early '90's Rudy Giuliani really shaped things up, and during Bloomberg's reign- coasting out Rudy's merit, hit it's pinnacle. This aside from 9/11/2001. The national liberal new order is really in bloom here now since Bill deBlazio is Mayor. The City Council represents the league of nations, and all walks EXCEPT anything representing a conservative notion.
That being said, bad things are beginning to happen. Crime is ticking up, but not quite as bad as when you were around, Russell. It's still a great tourism draw, and Manhattan is non compare for sights, museums, history, and experiencing a cross section of the world culture (FOOD too). I am headed up to Chelsea next Saturday with my son as he has a "Hackathon". While I'm waiting, I will drop by my old shop (we have a repair shop there with billion $ views) and walk the 20's between 10&11 and see all the are galleries. Also there is the http://fryingpan.com/site/ where we may have dinner if it's open yet.
I take the ferry, and either bike, bus, train where I have to go. Next Sat I'll drive in and park at the shop.

I did a LOT of work in the city back in the day.
I have no need to go there. Dont miss it at all.
