OK, I've got guages, BHAF, a 3200 governor spring, and a 3 1/2-4" exhaust. I know I'll need a 4" downpipe for a HX40, and probably POD's, what else? Will the turbo/injectors make the truck a laggy, fuel thirsty hot running pig, or will I still be able to maintain my fuel mileage and keep relatively cool towing 7K#? Thanks for any info-Nick

Do you already have this hx40w in hand or planning to buy one? From? Be aware, there are a ton of combinations of housings and wheels in hx40's. Not all are created the same. You might look into something other than the POD's for a good combination with the 40.

Even with a set of PODs, I don't think you have enough fuel to spool a 40 very well, without some more pump mods. Under 300rwhp, it is a laggy SOB. Even a PDR40 like I have. A HX35 w/ 'gated 16 will probably work better, depending on your future BOMB plans.

I saw one on Ebay new for $600, and I was curious as to how well it would do, from what you guys say I think I'm going to pass. I'd need something even bigger then POD's? What kind of mileage do these trucks get when equipped w/ big injectors/turbo? BTW Bgilbert, congrats on the dyno #'s.

Of course, you can get a HTT upgrade kit for your H1C and get more air, keep your old housing and cartridge. Cheaper than a new HX40 and direct bolt in. Talk to MMiller about towing with PODs. I think there are other options out there that would do better and be better matched to our piston bowl design. 190s, EDMs, Bully Dog, et al.

Even with stock injectors and and a turned up pump with a H1C & 12cm gated housing, I towed a GCVW around 22K all the time, and had zero issues with power or EGT. Experience since then tells me a 14 or 16cm housing would have been better, but it still wasnt bad.

Ahhh, don't talk to me about PODS, never had them. I have one of the last sets of cheap Bosch 185's and I like em. ;) I ran the truck for some time with just the fuel screw in a couple of turns past the lock. Then with that pump setting, all else pretty stock, I stepped up to the 185's. With the 33X12. 5 tires, 3. 55's, and 28,000#, the truck would run across I80 in Iowa, in OD with the cruise set at 72 mph all day long. Race Peterbuilts to the top of the hills. Now I've stepped up to 305/70R16s and the pyro is a problem, and the truck is working too hard. The tires are just plain too tall for towing heavy. Memorial day weekend I was towing two fullsize 4X4's on my 32' trailer, and a buddy was using his 99 dodge, 24 valve dually, SO pulling one truck on a bumper hitch trailer. I could keep up with him pretty good, a couple hills I was crowding him pretty hard. BUT I was fighting engine temp and pyro. When these tires are worn out, if not sooner, I'm going back to a 32" tall tire. I think alot of my problems will be gone.

A side note, pump timing was bumped last year at SOP, and I don't know if I like it there. I also shaved the washer on the A/F ratio and set the fuel pin to the most aggressive angle. Slight improvment in performance, nothing to write home about. The other day I ground on the fuel pin, and turned the high idle screw out of the way, allowing more travel of the throttle. Now I have much more black smoke, a few more pounds of boost, and a hotter pyro  . I just installed an AFE filter last night and ditched the air filter housing, but have not been on a test drive yet. Maybe tonight. I need to properly install the AFE with a tube and rubber boot, and 4" exhaust. Then maybe something with the turbo. Hey Bill, when are you sending me your old PRD 35/16? ;)

Hope I'm not too long winded. :(

Thanks for the info, by 32" tires do you mean 285/75-16's? I was thinking BFG All terrains or generals, BFG even makes an E range, but I think I'll stick w/ the D. Do you have a stock turbo on your truck? What about a 366 spring?

Either those or back to a 33X12. 5X16. 5. I'm getting old evedently, and more "appropriate" tires seem to be more important then the ones that "look" right. Or maybe raw towing performance is more important to me now then the trucks overall look. You'd never give me a set of Generals. BFG's are good by me. I like the MT's, but may go with AT's the next time. They work better on the pulling track anyway. ;)

Stock charger, completely. A buddy of mine that runs a twin turbo 24 valve was suprised by this. He said it spools real well with the large 18 cm housing on it. I think so too! I've been thinking of which way I'd like to upgrade my turbo system. I need more air, and I tow heavy. I like twins killing the pyro, but wonder if a PDR 35/16 would cure that or if I need something different. I defenatly do not want a lag pig. I rode in Bmoeller's truck, and thought it to be pretty laggy, however I was not driving either.

No gov spring either, that I know of. When I had my pump off to be repaired 7 years ago, the pump rebuilder had a "special" gov spring kit he put in. Dunno what it is, but the pump still defuels around 2400 rpms. Could not notice much of a difference in stock to rebuilt.

I had 315 75-16 all terrains on my 95, but it had 4. 10's also. They lasted almost 50K, would have lasted longer had I aligned my truck right after I lifted it... I switched from all terrains to mud terrains right before I sold it, the all terrains were quieter, rode nicer, and I think got better mileage.

Michael, you might check with GL or JL on one of the HTT wheel and compressor upgrades. That would give you more air. I got a 21cm dog here you could try out for added top end towing air. On a decently fueled truck the 21 is not a dog, just ask GL. That PDR turbo already found it's way onto the 91. 5 :p .

I hear ya on the getting old and not worried about big monster swamper tires for the daily driver or tow rig. My 265/75/16's look tiny when I go to a diesel truck event :-laf .

Michael,

You ought to ride in it since I put in the DDP 4s and bumped the timing. :D Still some lag right when you first stand on it with no boost at a stop, but it takes off almost as fast the stock turbo did when she lights. Can break the duals loose on dry pavement. Oo.

Sweet Oo. ! I figured you were going to make changes soon enough. I can't wait for another ride.
