Well I have had the PDR35 on for over a month now, so I thought I would write up a little report. I did not get to tow on Thanksgivings weekend like I had planned so EGT reductions are not part of the report. I did make the change to address the high EGT towing in the SW in Sept.
I had a very drive-able rig with small Jammer 1 injectors, Comp in EZ mode, 4 inch Banks brake and 4 in Banks/Magnaflow exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, Smaller NAPA BHAF intake, full DTT with 89 % TC, 4:10 gears and HY35 J-hooked to between 24-27 lbs of boost. Turbo spooled really fast, truck was not very noisy etc etc, and it was fairly quick between stop lights.
Right out of the box with the PDR35 I barked it a couple times, so I removed the silencer ring and tried to adjust my driving habits a bit, and have not had issues barking the turbo anymore.
Turbo spools almost as quick as the little HY did, and I believe that it pulls stronger at higher RPMs. I have a bit more turbo/air noise under the hood, and at low boost just loafing along I can hear turbo whine that goes away as I bring boost up. I only dyno'd 283/596 with the HY and feel that it has more now, as it does not seem to fall over at higher RPMs.
Got an adjustable elbow from Bob Wagner and set it to 30lbs.
Conclusions: I am happy with the setup and cost (200 for a used HX35w12 and 450 to turn it into a PDR35). The real test is to tow the 5er in the mountains, but that will have to wait until spring now.
Issues that I ran into. The HY had two studs and the manifold had two studs. The old style HX35 did not have any studs, so I had to get two grade 8 bolts. I believe that they were 7/19 inch, I picked ones at NAPA that had a long enough unthreaded area to reach thru both flanges for alignment. The bolts fit snug in both the flanges, but I had to drill out the gasket a bit. Cut off the extra length with a Dymo cut off wheel.
I had ordered a new Larry-B heat shield, but found that I could have modified the HY one to fit (so the HY in classifieds has a heat shield), as the notch for the oil supply line was the only difference.
