I was talking to my off-road friend today and he says hardly anybody uses a K&N filter any more for off-road. So I asked why, he said it was simple, he said take out your drop in K&N and hold it up to the sky and tell me what you see. I told I would do it in a bit. So later on I pulled the filter out and held it to the blue sky and saw 1000's of little holes in the filter, I would think that dirt is a lot smaller and would easily pass through these small holes. I grabbed the stocker filter and threw it back in.

The truck with the K&N ran better and and notice an increase in fuel mileage instantly. But it is not worth the cost of a new motor.

I thought I would pass this on to my TDR buddies and have you rethink the use of a K&N filtering system.

Think this way, why don't the big rigs use K&N filters?

Maybe I am wrong but I will stay with the stock deal.

K&N is no longer an option.

Thanks for your time.

Gotta love them K&N boys. They tout the fact that their filters will flow more air and will give more power. This be true! Only problem is, they don't tell you about how thin the filtering is. I got a friend that went through two MAS-FLOW units at $600 a pop before he figured it out. Stick with the stock or go to the AMSOIL.

107,000 miles on my '91 cummins with the K&N, had one on my '85 vette, and have one on my '98 Camaro SS - they all operate "as new" - guess they just haven't read about the "problems" with that nasty K&N #ad

Ay 107,000 miles on my Cummins, NO trace of contamination on the turbo inlet or vanes - and as I type this, an oil sample for analysis is ready for tomorrow's mail to Blackstone labs - we'll see how it checks out - sure hope my Cummins isn't ruined and I don't even know it... #ad

I've debated the K&N thing myself. I finally decided better safe then sorry. I know the K&N makes more power. I also KNOW the factory filter works.
I've read about people getting lots of miles with a K&N, but would they get more without?

I've got 128,000+ miles on my '93 and have used the K&N for the last 100,000 plus miles. I have done an oil analysis at each oil change and have never had a sample that was not OKed to go to the next interval. I change every 6,000 miles and use Amsoil 15W40 full synthetic. To me thats all the proof I need that K&N works just fine.

I had a bad K&N. Silicate level was 15 on my oil sample when running it, then dropped to half that when I put the Amsoil in. I got tired wiping the dust out of the inside of my intake hose #ad

I think most K&Ns are good and do the job, but there are bad ones out there and you won't catch me using one again.

I have posted this n times before. If an aftermarket air filter is so good for power, why can't the Dynojet pick up even one hp anywhere on the curve? I ran a Ram at the 390 hp level and the spoolup and hp curves were identical for a somewhat dirty Mopar filter, new Fleetguard filter, and no filter with the air box propped open. Is an ftermarket filter more efficient than no filter? At the suction needed for 30+ psi boost don't you think the turbo can suck even nonvolatile oil laden with dirt? Is 390 hp too low to see the mighty magic filters doing their great work?
Even after posting these results in the past, some folks swear their engines run better (=make more noise and subliminally convince you it makes more hp?) with an aftermarket filter
Sorry. #ad

I just switched from stock to the KN Re-0880 and noticed an instant SOP feel and turbo spool up reduced greatly. A buddy of mine is running 50psi with a KN in a swiss cheesed stock airbox and has ZERO dirt on the blades and in the hose. Also on my 91 toy 4x4 i have had my K&N so dirty that the truck would hardly run. Clogged with either dust or mud or water ETC. The truck had 176K on it when i got rid of it with a clean intake pipe and throttle body. I feel if i can take a K&N and clog it within a few hours and it not let any dirt go by i am in good shape. I am a FIRM believer in K&N filters

HHHHHMMMMMMMM. Think I debate yanking mine off. Seeing some of the stuff you guys saw.
I dont know who makes them. But are quite similar to k/n type filter. They were I think a light green in color. Also they were much better quality built.

The reason I run K&N is because that is the only filter that will fit in the PSA. The reason I use the PSA is because it lowers my EGT about a 100 to 150 degrees. I still need to get that 16cm2 housing on there.

I totally agree with Gary on this subject. I had a friend who put a K & N in his Banshee and went racing in the local quarry. He said after a couple of hours he noticed a big loss in power. He lifted up his seat and to his surprise there was a quarter inch of gravel dust laying inside of his beloved K & N.

After witnessing the gravel dust for myself, I removed mine and replaced it with the Amsoil filter. I think it actually flows better anyways and for half of the price of the K & N.

P. S. The K & N was oiled.

Gary C:

As I have said before, the K&N filters
will continue to be a controversial
subject. Like alot of other "after-
market accessories" it gets down to
personal preference. Like "Bob B",
"Clark", "Koa Man" (and others) I
have used the K&N filters with no
engine problems/failures. I have
115,000 miles on my truck and had
94,000 on my old 92' when I sold it.
I have had my oil checked with no
problems noted. As far as "big rigs
using the filters"..... my brother
has a Kenworth and he uses one.
As far as "widespread" use among
tractor-trailer drivers I really
don't know.

"ROAD WARRIOR":

My son races two (2) Yamaha Banshee's
in the A. M. A. Quadcycle and Mid-Atlantic
A. T. V. Series Races. He is sponsored by
"Duncan Racing" and runs their "National"
ported engines/pipes/heads etc. The
Banshee set up for "T. T" racing has
the "403 Eliminator" engine in it. We
run K&N filters in both of these quads
and for the past four (4) years have
had NO PROBLEMS out of either of these
machines. Most of the riders in these
series use the K&N filters. Some of the
tracks are EXTREMELY dusty too!!

I have also said before that one of
the biggest problems with the K&N is
improper oiling (i. e. : too much or too
little). Improper maintenance will
cause problems as it will with other
items on the trucks or 4-wheelers.

BOYS BOYS BOYS

Being new here I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers, I was trying to point out way I am not going to use the K&N anymore.

There was a difference in throttle response and how much throttle that was needed to get get the truck rolling. I'll miss that. I am going to look into the amsoil deal and I think it is time for a group hug. #ad

Gary, I recently bought a foam filter from www.westerndiesel.com It's a dual stage foam, oiled like a amsoil. It drops in like a stock filter and fit fine. I have since been to the desert and did quite a few miles on dirt roads. Lots of dust and I did a dirt check when I got home. No dust inside.
Check out their website.

Hummm, less restriction= less filtration, Less restriction= better mileage. IMO if you can get both, less restriction + better filtration, do it, if not you are taking a chance... also where do you drive your truck? That turbo is nothing more than a baby jet engine... . wanna take a chance of a "baby FO" entering it. I would rather watch that sensor go down and change as needed.

Professor Weber:

Always good to hear from you. I take 99% of what you say at face value and that applies to the quality control issue you raised. You would think K&N would have addressed that issue long ago. Thanks for the heads up.

Why just 99% and not 100%? Well, sometime back you offered some advice on slide-in campers. After studying them all carefully and reading about the ownership experience of others who had bought them I concluded that Northern Lite was a better buy than either Bigfoot or the Lance. Other than that one "slip up", your opinions have always been valuable and I'm happy to defer to you on the quality control issue... perhaps Gary's observations were right on and for that I owe him an apology!

Gary C:

I apoligize if I came on too strong. Please don't take any of what I say personally.

When it comes to filtration your stock filter may be doing just fine and there's no reason why you should switch it out for the K. Do, however, consider oil analysis to verify the effectiveness of whatever system you're using. Your stock box and filter may be working perfectly but with analysis there's no second guessing. Good Luck.
