Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Idle RPM increases

A friend of mine has a 2002 with a 6 spd. and after it's started and idles for a while, the RPM will steadily increase until he hits the accelerator. It happens in both warm and cold weather. I told him I would check with you guys since someone else has probably had the same problem and we could surely come up with an answer. Thanks in advance

Sounds like he's got the high idle feature enabled in the ECM. It should only happen in cold weather, and run it up to 1,200 RPMs or so if there's no brake or accelerator pedal activity. If it's really cold out, he may even see the 3 cylinder idle kick in. The first time that happens, he'll jump.

Really, it's *NOT* a bad thing.

P. S. No, I'm not an expert on it... ... . my Smarty enabled this feature, and I'm quite happy with it. Search for "cold idle" and "3 cylinder idle", there are quite a few posts about it here.

Next time it happens, tell him to press the brake pedal only and see if it stops. If it doesn't, then it's not the high-idle feature programmed in the ECM and is likely a malfunctioning APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) or a faulty ECM. The ECM controls engine speed.

Thanks guys, I told him about the ECM accelerating it to 2000 rpm, but he said his just keeps on accelerating past that. We'll try those other things mentioned. Thanks again
