This might be a stupid question but is Cummins honoring this problem only in warranty or will they fix it at any time?

I'm at about 80k and I'm thinking I need to push this thing to the limit and get it to crack before 100 comes around.

If they replace it you will only get the latest ISB block, either a "56" of the Mexican one, these are 12mm thick where the "53" is 6mm's. Block only covered under the 100K warranty.

Any block can crack. That one is more likely to, but don't subject it to fast changes in temperature, NEVER LET IT OVERHEAT!! , don't lug, and don't bomb to the limits and it can go as long as any other without trouble.

Stamey, the Navistar repair that you mentioned is done on a lot of truck engine blocks and consists of stopdrilling, then drilling a series of holes along the crack which are threaded with a tapered tap (like NPT) then screwing in a set of overlapping plugs. Once they're in a sealant is supplied that makes it all a pretty permanent fix. You might have a mobile service guy who will come to the truck to do it. Ask a phone book truck fleet service in your area - they'll probably know something that'll help you.

hammersley...

VP44 replacement was $1800 drive-out at an independant non-DC diesel shop. Brand new VP44. Original VP44 died at 138,000 miles. Diesels are expensive to work on.

Sorry for getting off subject. :(

not a 53 block!

hammersley,

After reading this thread I climbed under the truck and checked. I have the series of small numbers and not the larger '53' so I guess I have the Mexican block. My truck is an early '01 that still has the rear drum brakes.

MY 98 12v had a 53. I bought it from Cmonroe. It's been over 500hp for 50kmi (135 total).

I broke the cam in vegas and swapped it for a newer block. I didn't know I had a 53 until I had a motor ready to put back in it.

Run hard, Dream big.

Later,

Mark
