Happy New Year everybody

Back to reality, my injection pump has a small leak coming from the top front (looks like a bolt in the front of the pump between pump and gear cover). On a long run, 45-miles there is no leak on short runs in the neighborhood it leaks a small amont. I have been using "Power Service Diesel Kleen" from the local big-rig shop with good results, (every 4th tankful). Recently used "Valovline Syn-Power Diesel Injector Cleaner" from the Cummins Shop, I did three consectutive tankful treatments. The performance came alive. Well did I clean-out my seals and or 'O' rings in my injector? I also called the D/C-squeeler, had my VIN checked to pursue the pump recall, no luck with my numbers. Over $1,000. 00 for a pump, oh no!

Next step-Has any had someone like "Banks" rebluild pump with custom high performance specs? How much? Maybe I'll just add the 3. 5" straight exhaust while I'm at it?

As far as I know Banks doesn't do pumps! Back when I did the pump on my 93 I found a local Bosch fuel injection shop and they rebuilt it for me and turned it up a little. At that time it was between $500-600 but that was 4 years ago. Go to the bosch web site and see who is in your area.

VE Service

Local pump shop will "freshen" a VE for $600. For a bit more they will do some internal mods. If the pump is in need of replacement "hard parts" the cost skyrockets. $1200 easy for a complete rebuild. With internal mods, $1400 easy.



If the engine runs well, you wont need but a tune up repair, and maybe add some internal mods to your likening.



You may find you can locate and repair it yourself!

Is the leak around one of the hex head bolts that holds the top on the pump? If so it could several things. There is a o-ring type gasket under the pump top cover that could be leaking. A more likely place would be the throttle shaft seal is gone and the fuel is running down the side of the cover. The throttle shaft seals are a problem as the miles climb and you are about the right mileage to start thinking about freshening the pump and updating some internal parts before failure occurs. Your miles aren't real high but the truck has been in service for 10 years. The $600 to freshen a pump is a lot better than having things come apart and trash the pump and/or injectors. The next rebuild on my pump is going to need a pump body or a new pump as I ran it a bit too long before rebuilding. I was at about 190k when I noticed the performance start dropping and some small leaks. Good luck.

Good ideas, and information guys. Greenleaf, I like the idea of doing the repairs myself. Could you assist me in how to get the information needed to refresh the injector pump?

Yes... ... ... . and no.

You will be able to perform a few minor repairs yourself with the help of a couple of special tools and this site.



You can remove the pump and replace O rings and the throttle shaft seal, pump cover to body seal. Also installing the gov spring mod. Out side of this you will be pressed to go further. Use the sticky at the top..... "gov spring installation", along with a service manual to R&R other O rings.



I have only freshened one pump. It was off a John Deere 3010. I was in college, so had access to the test stand. I obtained the manual from the dealer,disassembled it, replaced commonly worn items, reassembled and test ran it on the bench tester. Unless your capable of this, you won't get any further than R&R of seals and some trivial items.



I know what your thinking. If I pull it off to replace seals, I may as well have a pump shop freshen it. This will be up to you. You know how long the pump has been in service. If it's sound you may just want to do it your self. If it's got age on it, I'd have a shop fresh'n it for ya.
