I recently bought a '98 12 valve engine to install in my truck. I have been trying to determine it's real mileage because I am fairly certain it is more than the 130k that was advertised. Today I pulled two injectors, the #5 &6. They were both oil soaked below the snap ring. So I need some help here because my memory is dim. I have only removed the injectors on my '97 twice. First when I replaced the head gasket (196k) and again when I replaced them with new ones (540k) and that was three years ago. I don't remember them being covered in oil. I am almost afraid to ask, do I need to pull the head and see what is in there? This is one that has been wiped off the one that is still dripping oil.

I know they should be well-sealed, and I've never pulled one on my engine so I don't know if there is an o-ring or what, but I do know that mine sat surrounded by oil on top all the time until I replaced the valve cover gaskets. Is it possible the seals/o-rings or whatever are bad and allowed such oil to seep down onto them if your new/used engine has similarly leaky v. c. gaskets?

Or, could someone have allowed the engine to lay on it's side or something and gotten crankcase oil into places it normally never collects?

As I progressed from the rear to the front the amount of oil in each hole decreased. The #1 was totally dry. There is evidence the cover gaskets leaked, the previous owner had tried to seal them with black RTV. Unfortunately I am three times removed from him/her. The engine was sold to a guy who decided to sell it to the guy that I bought it from. For now I'm going with the leaking cover gasket theory. :-laf

I'm thinking if they were seated properly, it has to be coming from the top Gary. I have seen one, a 1st gen, that showed oil leakage because the copper seal was leaking, compresion pushing a bit up past the seal.

I think the oil is from thetop also. This engine is giving me fits. Want to see a couple pics of the KDP damage?

LOL, it's not that bad. I did check the case for cracks before I bought it. The KDP scarred up the inside of the case and cover, but no other damage. You can see the shiny area and a couple of dings on the case, and the track leading to the shiny scrape on the cover.

"Dodge"d a bullet on that KDP!!! Oo. Yes there is a pos o ring on top of the injector, they get old, dry out and crack, letting dirt and oil down around the injector.

Scott, all real men have changed their 12 Valve injectors..... perhaps this is the reason you dont find Palin attractive?

:rolleyes::D;)

Hey guy's new to the fourm,just wanted to chime in with the valve cover gaskets were the culprit on my oil around the/in injectors. I thought the same thing to until i cleaned them all then resealed the valve covers (and set the lash while i was in there) after that all has been dry that was 6k ago.
