2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission installing factory lsd in open dana 80

Can you install a the factory power loc lsd in the open dana 80 or is better to get a aftermarket brand?Do you have to change out a bunch parts for lsd or will go right in?What years of the dana 80 are the same. thanks plater

go with a detroit. factory lsd just isn't the same once you've used a detroit.

The factory LSD is a full carrier, so you'll get to do at least a partial gear set up. I'd consider new bearings and seals while you're in there. Based on your post, I'd suggest that you find someone to make the swap for you as you'll need a press and a good dial indicator to get it set right.



As far as locker vs. LSD, that's more personal preference. Lockers are NOT for everyone.

Has anybody heard of a locking unit that drops in to the factory open

diff? Powertrax I think was the name. I talked to them when I first

got my truck and they said they had one for a Dana 80, but finally I

decided I didn't really need it - hard ground traction no problem,

soft ground truck sinks to China! Have heard they are way strong in

a street/strip car application, but realize a CTD is different animal.

That's called a "lunchbox" locker, supposedly because it's small enough to carry in a lunchbox and install over lunch hour.



Don't know about D80 and CTD applications, but the Jeep guys occasionally use them. Not the hardcore types, they tend to grenade them.

What he said. The lock right is ok, but marginal in a CTD. I have broke a few of them in my 74 power wagon. There are many different models (quick lock, lock right/powertrax, ez locker, etc).

Id say stick to the factory LSD if you dont go in the dirt much. If you do, get a detroit.
