Competition Media Exposure at DHRA Vegas Nationals

Alright guys I personally dislike Fords if you haven't realized this from my other posts around TDR. I used to have to work on them and I also used to drive one as a hand me down way back in the day. But anyways open a new browser window and click the link and watch this bunch of idiots back to back pulling. sure the cummins drags the ford and even better he puts it to shame by dragging it a mile.

alright I will say pretty much the same thing I said on my myspace about this video. 1st of all this is very dangerous they way the have these trucks hooked up. YOU CANNOT USE A OFFROAD RECOVERY STRAP FOR THIS USEAGE!!!!!! as you can see the strap stretches which only adds to the safety factor or lack there of. You must use 1/2" cable use 3 u-bolt per end and clamp the cable around a thimble (think is what it is called). When hooking the cable up do not attach to bumper mounted ball only 2x2 tow hitch or pulling hitch. you can also use a shop rag to tie the cable to be held in place while pulling. THE SHOP RAG IS NOT TO SUPPORT THE LOAD IT IS TO ASSIST IN HOLDING THE CABLE IN PLACE WHILE LOAD IS BEING APPLIED AND TRANSMITTED BETWEEN THE HITCHES AND CABLE. don't give me hell about this one as I worked at a shop and we hosted many off pulling events right there on the concrete pad out front I have experience with thtis stuff. Not to mention I do get calls from people needing tows and offroad recovery and I will sometimes use nylon zip ties to hold the chain or cable in place during the processes. in response to the video a tow strap would have been alot better than the recovery strap. A recovery strap has a higher load rating but is designed to stretch to apply more force to assist in rolling over a vehicles and recovery them from the mud. In back to back pulling you dont want the cable to stretch violently like in this video as it is a safety factor as I post type about later on in this post. you both roost your tires and get them hot and sticky for extra traction during the pull. Nitto terra grapplers are some really great tires for pulling since they are sticky when hot also super swamper sx's are also a good tire for concrete pad. soaking your tires in diesel only adds to the sticky effect. after a good burn out have your crew member sweep the pad while you hook up. both of you tighten up and start pulling. DON'T USE THE BRAKE EVER WHILE PULLING YOU TEND TO BREAK AXLES, HUBS, PINION, DRIVESHAFTS MORE!!!!! i know severe learnt from experience. When you tighten up and start pulling try not to spin the tires you wan them to hold ground. But if you start to get drug around floor it wipe open this will heat up your tires and you will tend to have the advantage and win the next 2 pulls and advance to the next round. Also watch you transmission temps they will cook if you sit there holding and not going anywhere for too long. if you haven't made any progress after 3 minutes somebody has got to give up and floor it to cool off their transmission but if you have infinite coolers and high capacity flowing through ice keep duking it out until your opponents transmission drips a few drops and the truck explodes into flames. what happens is the torque converter sits there building up heat when its turning but what it is driving isn't turning. Finally it gets very hot and bleeds onto the exhaust and its too late the exhaust is so hot it sets fire to the fluid and heats up trans case and it raise temps more and loses more fluid and long story short somebody is gonna be getting towed to a transmission shop but on the way there will have alot of crap from fire extingluisher to clean up first. maybe some wiring and other things that melted by the heat of the explosion. So your cool is to run as much cooling systems as you can afford. I have seen guys with about $900 (i am guessing on the low side) of pumps, pan, lines, and coolers. He was running about 4 tilton oil pumps and specialized pan for the pumps and had 5 coolers all in a series.

Next tip if you don't have traction bars and you have blocks in the rear suspension you must run a 3 inch rachet strap from the one side of frame under axle tube at the center section over the top off the pinion part of the cast center section under the opposing side axle tube and up on the frame then tighten the **** out of it. this will keep the spring wrap in check to keep the drive shaft in the truck.

It you want to break stuff keep getting in it like the ford driver did as the suspension loads and unloads like that. He did break at the end of the pull is you noticed it stopped pulling and the dodge driver got out to make sure his shtuff wasn't broke after hearing something. also as soon as the crowd full of drunks saw they where using a nylon recovery strap they should have ran for the hills. They were all lucky that the ford didn't throw a u-joint and have it lodged into their stomach or body for that matter. they should have been back a few more yards. if i am correct this video was made at a dragstrip. I hope they had really good attorneys helping them figure out how to make themselves not responsible for the event of injury but the shop I was working at didn't have insurrance so we took every precaution we could.

WHAT EVER YOU DO TRY TO BE SAFE AND PULL RESPONSIBLY. Don't do in the street. only do it own your own property such as at your shop, in your store parking, or in your cow troft (been to a few pulls in one it was cool). if you wanna hook up in the dirt your reading the wrong post. If you have any questions about pulling submit them here and PM me to let me know to come back to this post. I normally remember more things when I get to discussing stuff with someone or taking what I see and applying common sense. also You can legally hook up in your driveway in front of your house that you own. if mine was longer and didn't have the garage in the way in the event of run away and the public street wasn't so close I would be on here looking for guys to hook up to.

THIS POST IS IN RESPONSE TO THE PURE STUPITIY I AM SEEING ON YOU TUBE.

Why should I take your advice?? I want to try something different?? I am gonna drag him 300 ft in 6 secs!!! I am just being devils advocate there. You refuse to listen to people who have tried it before as far as pulling, people who have many college math classes, etc, etc. Most of your advice on the back to back makes some since. I disagree with the not holding the brakes, most of the times these are pretty informal, and the guy your hooking against has zero clues, the transmission cooling is a big factor.

Derek,

Love your posts! keep up the goodwork!

It wasn't at a dragstrip. It was on a side street behind the hotels at the Indy nationals either last year or the year before (I can't remember for sure). And yes I backed WAY up when they started going - I was down towards the end of the street.

It was IRP 05. He is the guy (ford) that tried to spin his truck around and hit the curb and blew the tire off the rim. Then of course a fine gentalman with grace and elagance came out in a dodge and showed him how to spin a dodge around on a dime-----and gave him 9 cents change!!!!!!

I wonder who that could have been????;)

Im with JW3. I often find myself searching for posts by DerekW. He has interesting view points on almost every subject pertaining to the diesel world.
