Last week I started getting a intermittent loud band from the front end. When it happens I am returning the wheel from a left turn and going straight for a few feet. Problem is only once or twice a day but so loud people on the sidewalk jump.

Went to a front end place, all checked out except for some play in the steering so I wne to the dealer.

The dealer just replaced the steering box and a bunch of stuff connected to it. On the trip home, same thing happened.

I am in need of some suggestions. It never happens on a test ride.

The noise is sometimes like a hammer hitting steel, other times like a baseball card in bicycle spokes for a few seconds sometimes like a baseball being sucked into a vacuum.

Odd problem for sure. I can't place what it might be, but I moved your post from the FAQ forum to the normal 3rd. gen forum.

If the front end-- steering parts and hubs are OK, then check the front universal joints (assuming the truck is four wheel drive). Also check for cracks in any steering and suspension arms, and check the integrity of the control arm and track bar bushings.

Check the upper frame mount on the track bar. I've seen a few trucks where its has not been tightened enough (an impact gun is not enough). Its a noise that always seems to occur after front end repairs are done... ... ... .

The only thing to ever make noise on mine was the sway bar end-links. The first one was replaced by Dodge but when the second one started banging, I bought the aftermarket (Maxx links) parts from Geno's. They're a great improvement and dont have the little Tie-rod style joint that wears out on the stockers.

Had a similar problem with mine after some transmission work. The mechanic didn't properly adjust the linkage to the transfer case and the truck wasn't shifting completely out of 4WD. It would come out of 4WD after a while, but if there was a bind, especially after a turn, I would be going straight for a bit and then there would be a big bang!

I adjusted the linkage and the problem disappeared.

Good luck!
