So who out there tows with 4:10's ? curious what your sweet spot for MPH seems to be and what gear?

Those with 4.10's tow in 6th gear. Those that tow heavy with 3.42's tend to tow in 5th. Final gear ratio is about the same.

3.42 x .77 = 2.6334
4.10 x .63 = 2.583

Note: In tow haul the Aisin with 3.42's will not shift to 6th gear until slightly over 65 MPH.

The difference in tire diameter SRW 33.1 and DRW 31.8 make up for the slightly taller DRW final gear ratio. Everyone says that taller gears are not good, however in my book towing in double over drive negates any difference. Motor is working against final gear ratio, not just the differential ratio, which is the combination of transmission gear ratio and differential ratio combined.

I have done two round trips in western states, Washington to Arizona, on differing routes all with lots of grades to climb and descend at 24,500 combined weight.

It's not the upper gears where 4.10's will make a difference, it's the lower gears where the 3.42 trucks lose out of final gearing.

Look at J2807, it's not at 65 mph, heck it's not even at 40 mph on a grade for a DRW. The low speeds and acceleration are where the gearing differences are noticeable. This is why a 20% change in gearing allows for a 33% increase in GCWR.

It's not really a whole lot different than looking at a 6.4 Hemi vs a 6.7 Cummins, The Hemi has more HP so it has the power to hold more weight at speed but it has a lot harder time getting the weight to speed. 3.42's can hold the speed without an issue, they just don't get there as easily.

That is why they are rated to tow 17K+ trailers and not 29K+ trailers like 4.10 DRW trucks. Choose your poison, based on how you will use the truck. Some with 4.10's have said it was be nice to lockout 1st gear use when running bobtail. Sort of like the old granny gear 4 speed I had in my 1963 Sub. Only used that gear for pulling house over or stumps out of the ground.

I use my 2015 close to its max ratings and would not trade the gearing for anything else. The lower 1st and 2nd gear of the Aisin vs the 68RFE is what makes the 3.42 gears work!

I put a roof on the Bighorn 5th wheel or Ron and I could get together and have a drag race with our two combinations. With him being very heavily loaded and our rig close to it's rating, I think they would be pretty much equal in a drag race.

It is hard after using our truck for almost 4 years now to understand why so many that do not even have the same setup think they are geared wrong.

With the 68RFE I can understand 3.73s, but not with the Aisin.

A fellow RAM Mobile Suites guy has a 13 MEGA Dually with AISIN/3.42's. He tows at 34k combined, I am at 33k-35k combined. He loves the combo and has zERO issues towing in 5th and takes off on grade with ease with the AISIN's lower starting gears.

I guess since he tows a Mobile Suites, that makes it just fine to exceed his GCWR of 29,000 lbs by 5,000 lbs........

Reminds me of when I towed a combined 29k with my HO 11 DRW and SOME on here were crying the Sky Is Falling!!!

Even tho Stan Gozzi when asked if I should swap to 4.10’s said leave the 3.42’s if I want “it can’r Hurt it’s self”.

If you don’t know Stan Gozzi’s credentials too bad!

There are many things to consider when trying to decide between a 2500 and a 3500. Weight is number one (non dually 3500). I have a 2016 3500 with the Aisan transmission and according to the specs a 2500 can actually pull more but falls about 1500 lbs short on the pin weight. The difference in price is not that much so not a big issue . The big one for me was coil sprigs versus leafs . I prefer leafs I think they make the rear end more stable and fewer parts to wear. The big thing is don't get the Ram boxes if using a 5th wheel hitch almost made a $75000 mistake and nobody at the dealer knew. Some people have done it using a Sidewinder and on my Curt hitch it says not to us one again just another extra part. The ride difference between the the two is not a big deal, if you drive over a quarter in either one you will know if it was heads or tales. Just remember you can under load but you shouldn't overload your truck.
