Camera Stolen On Haloween.........

Semper Fi

I had a little run in with a rather large deer and another car Friday evening and now own a totaled Ford pickup. Scared daughter and I but we weren't hurt. The Redneck Toadstomper is overseas and said to go buy a new (?) whatever I want. Instead of new, I found a 2001 Cherokee Limited with 19,000 miles. It isn't the top of line model but it is loaded except leather and power seats. Are these reasonably trouble free and is $14,500 a fair price. I don't really see a reason to buy new. Daddy's daughter AKA Redneck Toadstunker said you guys would give advice. Thanks, Mrs. Redneck

I've never been a Cherokee fan. I've looked at a few, but they're still jeeps. To me that means they're going to require work. I don't mind working on a jeep, it's part of owning one.

The price seems a little low to me, for that low a milage. Makes me wonder what's wrong with it. Are there alot of jeeps in your area? Is there a good service dept. to fix it for you?

Go to edmunds.com and do some research on this Cherokee. They have forums like this where you can read others experiances with the vehicle.

I don't know anything about the Cherokees. But a friend of my daughters bought one about a yr ago and has had no problems. I see a lot of them on the road. My daughter has a 03 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition and has had no problems. Mileage around town is around 18 but it you get on the highway it gets up in the high 20s. Does this had a V6 or V8 engine?I have found out that you do not have to replace a timing belt on these cause they run a timing chain. I see a lot of them on the roads. Go to Edmunds and http://www.epinions.com/ and look up that model and see what they have to say about them. You can check out Kelley Blue Book too. Any more questions just cause somebodys here.

When buying any used vehicle

If you are not really familiar with the mechanical working of cars/trucks - take it to your mechanic for an inspection and estimate of what repairs will be needed to bring it into top shape. If you deal with a mechanic on a regular basis the fee should be very small or even free. If the seller refuses to let the mechanic take a look - refuse the deal at any price.

Not knocking Cherokees - advice applies to all vehicles.

Edmunds gives a price of 12,235-16,102 for a 4X4 limited so the price sounds fair. As for the Jeep itself, I have owned a '92 Cherokee, a '93 Wrangler and the wife currently owns a '99 Grand Cherokee. I haven't had any problems with any of them. If it has the 4. 0L, it should be a nice vehicle. I would think twice about it if it has the 2. 5L 4cyl. I have owned both engines (the 2. 5 was in my Wrangler) and the 4. 0 is much more desirable. It has a lot of low end torque and gets fairly good mileage.

Jeeps have their "quirks" as do any vehicle on the road but if you maintain it as it should be, it should give you miles of trouble free service.

One downside to the Cherokee is the small interior. It can get a little cramped on long hauls.

BTW, I love the wife's '99 Grand with the 4. 7. It's always fun to embarrass Mustangs and Cameros from light to light.

Redneck Toadstomper,

I currently have an 01 Cherokee Sport that I purchased new to replace the 95 that my wife had an accident in. The '95 had 145K on it when it was totaled. The only thing I replaced on it was a water pump at about 100k. My '01 has 62K on it currently and has been very reliable. I just replaced the rear wiper motor last week, and the front pinion oil seal went at 13K under warranty.

Now with that said, the Cherokee is a crude vehicle. It doesn't ride extremely well, and will get you 19mpg if you take it easy. It is relatively good off road in stock form. Parts are easily found and somewhat inexpensive. And in general I have been very pleased with it as an everyday ride.

I have found it to be the easiest vehicle to do routine maintenance on that I've ever had. All the filters and drain plugs are in easily accessible.

Cherokee

The wife has a 93 Grand Cherokee with the 5. 2l(318). She loves it. It has 155K, and the only failed parts were the water pump. Due to an off road excursion (Pothole) it did short a pos cable & fry an ECM, but I can`t fault the rig for that. 19-22 MPG on the road, and 15 in town. Find one of these instead of the "little" Cherokee & you will be happier. DK. :D

I bought it

Thanks for your replies. I bought it today after a lot of haggling for $13,900. It was in a slight accident last year that involved a new grill and bumper that were verified by repair tickets. No other damage. Finally talked to The Toadstomper this afternoon and he was glad I found what I liked even if it's not new. I'm hoping he will be home for Thanksgiving. He's sure ready to be home and get back to doing what normal folks do.
