One of the things I did to pass the time and try to keep my mind off the pain while I was down waiting for the surgery I had today was shop for a new bike. I quit riding in '89 because of a bad road racing accident. I periodically picked up bike mags and fought off the urge to ride for nearly 10 years. In late 98 I came across an ad from Kawasaki for the ZRX1100. For those of you into bikes you'd remember the '81 & '82 KZ1000 ELR (Eddie Lawson Replica) - I've always wanted one. Eddie Lawson was my idol when I was a kid and man did I love that lime green bike! Well, the Kawasaki ad for the new ZRX1100 was written for me - it was something along the lines of "You know you've always wanted one, dreamt of it . . . . Now's your chance". They said it was going to be a limited edition bike (turned out to be limited to however many they could sell :D ).

Knowing I couln't afford the $7k buy in at the time I went to the dealer to find out how many they were making to see if I'd have the chance to buy one used down the road. Saw an '86 Nighthawk 700s sitting there for $1600 and decided I could have a lot of fun on it for now. So I bought the Nighthawk and have been dreaming about the ZRX all this time. Fast forward to now and the early ZRX's are pretty affordable now. So I started shopping on the net during my down time. Bid on a few of em on ebay, etc. The good news is I found my bike!!!!! I'm picking it up with Rob Thomas's help (can't drive cause of my shoulder surgery) next saturday! It's a 2000 in close to perfect condition (a couple of scrapes on one of the engine covers and one the fairing - I'll repair or replace em) with just over 6,000 miles on the clock. Going to change a couple things right away - change the seat to a Corbin gunfighter & lady (with a removable backrest for my wife) and get rid of the tank bra.

I'm high on life (oh, and the pain killers ;) ) right now - can't wait to have my dream bike parked in the garage! Here's a picture of my new baby:

Those bikes are cool

A friend of mine had one similar to that, except I think his rims were green. I dunno, thats been a long time ago. Congrats Steve, on the bike... and the pain killers.

Steve, was it wise to buy a bike as powerful as that right after should surgery? You are gonna have to go under then knife again for them to reattach your arms!!!

When I was at the Air Force Academy, we weren't allowed to have motorcycles until we graduated. A buddy of mine rode away from our graduation ceremony on a ZX7RR replica bike-- I think it was Kevin Schwantz. That thing sounded like a works bike! It looked the part too...

Personally, I lust after a Hayabusa. The guys at the local drag strip have them turning mid-upper 9's in the quarter, and they are BONE STOCK! Yikes!

Steve, Congratulations on your purchase! I bought mine new as a birthday present to myself in "99 and have loved every minute of it! If you have any questions, try the website www.ZRXOA.ORG. There are alot of knowledgeable people there with alot of information. BTW, check my sig.

LOL - zrxoa.org is where I found my bike! I've been reading zrxoa for close to a year. I plan on keeping it meaty in the low end and mid range for fun on the street so I probably won't go for the ZX11 cams. My Nighthawk that I have now is very peaky and doesn't make much power until it's over 7,500 rpm. I want something that has power NOW. It already has a full muzzy exhaust on it with an Ivan jetting kit. I'll probably put K&N pods on it and go with a full stage 3 kit and call it good engine wise. I have a bid in on ebay for a spare rear wheel for the dragstrip already too :D . I feel like a kid right before christmas!

Hohn - I've got enough control in my old age that I won't twist the throttle too hard until I'm sure I won't rip my arm out :) . I was riding 4 weeks after my last shoulder surgery and hope to have the same kind of recovery this time around but I can wait - I've waited almost 5 years to get it, a few more weeks won't kill me.

I miss mine..

I recently sold my '99 ZRX1100. Bought it 2nd hand with 2,300 miles on it in showroom conditon and 100% stock. I kept it that way too. For me it was all about the bikes' looks. The ELR memories N stuff. :) I had been on the ZRXOA forums since the beginning.

For seven years I rode a '93 ZX11 D1. Now that is a HOT ROD of a bike. I put over 12,000 miles on it (not much to some; I only put 2,400 on the ZRX in the 2 years I had it).

What I have left is a '95 Kawasaki KLX650C "dual sport" thumper that I bought used back in '96. It's a fun bike but I need my streetbike back! Probably gonna be another ZX11 or a 12R. For now I have to enjoy the KLX. . at least I still have a bike. So far I've had a motorcycle of some sort since I started riding in 1980.

Now that the wife is pregnant with our first, my finances are being diverted away from buying "toys". But I WILL have another big bore bike! :D

Have fun with your ZRX. Hope you can enjoy it with the shoulder as it is. How long do you think it will be till you can ride? Still it's good mental therapy to have the bike out in the garage where you can sit on a chair and drink brewskies while just looking at it!

Here's the KLX.

Here's a pic of the one I had, in front of my current Cummins Ram.

With my shoulder surgery I had 7 months ago I was riding within a month and it was a more involved surgery. I'm already doing better at 3 days than I was at a week then so hopefully within a few weeks. Not that I'll be ripping off wheelies or testing the limits at that point or anything ;) . The way our weather's been this winter their may not be an opportunity to ride before then anyways.

All I can say Steve is "BE CAREFUL!" I have lost two friends to motorcycles. I still ride but MY speed is a '67 Triumph 200cc Tiger Cub.

About 7 years ago, I rode a Suzuki GSX 1100R... . MY GOD it was too fast. :--)

As the saying goes... It is always the other guy you have to look out for.

Hope your surgery goes well and remember any LOVED ones when you ride. It keeps me from getting stupid on motorbikes. Chris

That is EXACTLY why I just sold my dirt bike, good ridance, I have trouble not winning battles with trees.

Went for a ride last night on my '84 ZX900. I bought it from the original owner last year with 11k miles on it. He is an auto body guy and did the custom paint himself. I worked with the guy and know its entire past. It rides like it's new. 4 K&N's and twin Super Trapps. Some guy tried to play with me in his ricer last night, he didn't stand a chance!:D

I like the retro bike look:

It's no Jesse James, but still a head turner. ;)
