Found dusting inside my turbo inlet!!! K&N is out, BHAF is in!!

As soon as I put the BHAF in a friend of mine walked by and said that the BHAF is not a good idea because it draws hot air from the engine compartment. How bad is this?? Should I just bite the bullet and go with AFE Proguard 7 Stage 2??

Thanks, Johnny

Don't listern to him. There are so many opinions on this subject, you just have to make up your mind and not listen to everyone else. Past threads have shown that at any kind of speed the underhood temp. is the same as the outdoor temperature. If you're concerned about heat get a heat shield from LarryB. That's what I did. I used to have a mallory type mount but I kept cutting my arm every time I did an oil change so I took it off and bought Larry's heat shield. I think the BHAF removes any question about whether you're getting clean air or not. They have great filtration, flow a lot of air, don't cost a weeks pay and they last a long time. Get an Outerwears cover is water is an issue. Also, put a 2" long piece of 4" exhaust pipe in the neck of the BHAF to stiffen it so the turbo intake hose doesn't slip off. Sure, I know the AFEs and the rest LOOK cool, but I'd rather have the peace of mind of knowing that I'm getting plenty of good CLEAN air. The BHAF flows plenty of air for all but the most bombed trucks out there. Maximum flow numbers are all well and good but do they really matter all that much. Most of it is just bragging rights or theory anyway. I think you made a good choice especially since it appears you do some driving in dusty conditions. Good Luck.

Jim is right ... don't listen. The BHAF dropped my EGT by 50 degrees.

If / when you upgrade to an HX40 or the likes, the BHAF REALLY makes a difference in spool up too.

i kicked my K&N drop in filter to the curb about 9 months ago, and got a afe stage one intake. dropped my egt's and made my turbo spool so much better!

I agree with Jim, too.

I've been wondering about the merits of a cold air intake. With the AFE, or any filter, once the air passes out of the filter to the intake tube, it's going to pickup heat from the intake tube itself. Then, on to the unshielded pipe to the intercooler, where the air picks up yet more heat before actually reaching the intercooler.

To have truly 'cold' air, I would think that both tubes would have to be shielded (As someone on the TDR has already done. ).

By The way, who is LarryB, please?

Just took a 600 mile round trip pulling 13k pounds worth of horses and trailer. Lower EGT's!!! Quicker spool. And I love the shock factor when I pop the hood to show people. OMG it's so biiigggg and sttrrronngggg!!!!!! That's what I hear from the ladies at least! LOL

After i bought my truck i found out that i had a K&N drop in filter in it . I have one in my Bronco but after reading some posts i decided to get rid of the one in my Dodge. I got a drop in AFE pro gard 7 from Rip if i hop this thing up i may replace it with the stage 2 .

And how long did the doctor say it would take to recover from that horse kickin ya in the head!!:-laf

Ditched my K&N when I found that sticky K&N filter oil was stickin to inlet pipe, inside the turbo housing and even down into the intercooler pipe, talk about a "pain in da proverbial" to clean up :{ ... but I love my BHAF, its my BBW . . BIG, Beautiful, and White) :-laf , lowered my EGT's from 800 at 75MPH cruise to a shade over 700 and man can that turbo sing ... music to go :)

I noticed that too. I can hear the turbo a lot more with the BHAF than I could with the K&N. And they filter the dirt better! Wish I would have found out about this sooner.

JL,

you might want to look into an outerwears cover for that filter. they make a waterproof version. I liked my bhaf (also replaced my k&n). Just couldn't pass up the deal on my pg7 from aFe.

If you don't drive in real dusty conditions you probably won't ever notice it. I drive in dust every day (except when it rains) and I noticed dust in the turbo inlet.

I just ditched my k&n for a bhaf also, only other mod is an EZ, maybe the k&n was pretty dirty but i noticed a 100 degree drop in egts at wot and 50-75 degree drop @70mph, turbo spools noticably faster also. I was nervous because it rained several days before i got my outerwears but now ive got no worries. I wish i had changed over as soon as i got my truck.
