I'm sure that the answer to my question is posted here somewhere but here it goes anyway.

While changing my thermostat I noticed the front seal on the crank is leaking. So as long as the font cover has to come off might as well tab the KDP.

What does it take to do this? Does someone have a parts list with all p/n's. I read that TST has a kit for this? I looked on there website but could not find it.

Do the radiator and condenser have to be removed? Do I need a special puller for the crank balancer? I would like to have all necessary parts and tips rounded up before I start.

Anything you guys have will be helpful.

Thanks!

See the sticky post "what is the KDP and how do I fix it"

Several have shown instructions. .

The fan is removed, the radiator, shroud and condensor left on.

Call TST, its a tab and bolt, the tab covers the end of the dowel pin, assuring it never falls out.

The jig method precisely, drills, countersinks and taps the gear housing with threads so a bolt can be threaded in to block the dowel pin from coming out.

The tab isn't bad since you are repairing your crank seal.

Set the seal from the inside of the cover (drive it in from the back after noticing where the original was) Don't set it quite as deep so the seal has a new surface on the crank to ride on. Degrease the nose of the crank, the seal is installed dry. I usually put some locktite on the od of the seal to "seal it to the cover. " It should prevent any oil leaks around the od. .

Good luck

Andy

TST kit

Now I see the kit, thanks Illflem. What is included in the kit? Is it the cover gasket, crank seal, KDP tab and a bolt? Do they know when it will be back in stock?

Am I going to need a puller to get the balancer off?

Does anyone have the TST gauges?

The kit contains gaskets? I kinda doubt it contains all of them.

Likely the tab, bolt and a crank seal? I usually change the cover gasket too (cover to gear housing gasket, follow cover perimeter).

It can be had from Cummins or Dodge for about $35-37(Cummins #3918673, Mopar 4638719 gear housing cover gasket 12 valve). The crankseal is about $25-30 from Cummins or Dodge (Cummins 3804899, don't have the mopar number handy)

Maybe they have found an aftermarket source for the gear housing cover gasket if included...

The vibration dampner must be removed, it is retained by four cap screws that have a 15mm head, you will need an engine barring tool, strap etc. to hold the engine while these are broken loose and retorq'd for the re-assy process. Torq. them to 105 lb. ft. .

The spec for the engine speed sensor is . 050 clearance, torq. the cover bolts to 18 lb. ft. You will need some black RTV for the glueing the gasket to the cover. I use some on the bolts too.

Good luck, Andy

The kit doesn't contain the big gasket.

gpuller

If TST is out of stock, email me for the specs for a tab and instructions to do the job.

GPULLER

If your 98 is a 24 valve the kit does not have a cover gasket. you can go to cummins and buy the GRAY stuff and use as a sealer for the cover. It remains tacky, and is not effected by oil or fuel. The 12 valve that i done did have a gasket on it. bought a kit from CUMMINS and every thing was included, (check to be sure) except the tab and bolt. (i sourced my own tab and bolt) how ever you can order this from them also.

just do it.

It just occurred to me (and I'm sure it's been answered before), Has the KDP ever been covered by a Technical Service Bulletin?

I just looked at the TSBs covering 2nd generation (94-02) trucks under "engine" nothing about the KDP. Could be in 1rst generation or under a different category.

TST or Joe G. directions are good.

I used silicone gasket sealer/maker and it sprung a leak(it took it a while to leak).

My mechanic ordered gasket from Dodge so far so good.

It was stated that there was not a problem. From Cummins or Dodge. very few were taken care of "because it could happen". But then the question???????? Why did they develop a repair kit to fix it????? So-- we at the TDR site with our knowledge and wanting to avoid the problem and cost associated with this "not a problem Item" We fixed it our selves. So if you have not done yours, and there is a potenial it could happen. --GETTER DONE--

The TDR members use to say "if" it happens now they say "when" it happens.

For peace of mind and a decent good night sleep if you haven't fixed the KDP fix it now. I fixed both my Mule and Moose (Freightliner).

By the way have both TST and Joe G KDP intructions.

Simply amazing and Cummins gets away with murder on the KDP issue. Recalls up the yahoo every year and the manufacturers pay the bill. Can't figure why they get away with this defect on their motors.

I used the Fel-pro kit and made my own tab. I believe I purchased it from Auto Zone. You can also purchase the gray or black permatex gasket sealer from them. It's been three years with no leaks. Don't forget to tighten the gear case bolts while your in there. They tend to loosen with time. Mine were. There a couple behind the came gear that are a little tricky to get to. Good luck.
