Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting 45/70 Revolver

hi robin

My SIL feels the need for a CCW (her ex) and she is a very tiny girl. She is the only one in the family that dosent care about shooting but she feels the need for some kind of defencive weapon. I was looking at the Lady Smith for her, her hands are the size of a child's. Will the Lady Smith take the +P ammo? or if you have anyother options we would be glad to listen. I have nothing that she could handle and she would feel ok with. She kind of likes the idea of not having the hammer just pull the trigger type thing;

Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Handgun :: Choose by Caliber :: 38 Special :: 38 Special +P 110 gr FTX® Critical Defense®

Hey BIG! Model 642(latest model, hammerless) or Model 60(exposed hammer), as far as I can tell. The 642 will handle . 38 Special +P. GregH

Big. I carry one of those Lady Smiths every day because my wife hates it. Especially for someone with small hands and +P ammo this gun can be less than fun. :eek: With some recoil absorbing grips it is better than those hard rosewood stocks buts still will get your attension with +P ammo. I have also sold 2-3 of these to guys for their wives and I don't know that any of them are carrying them now. Just a thought.

That's what I put in my woman's hands. She doesn't like the P loads. I don't know what the difference between an airlight & the ladysmith. She likes the internal hammer & I put a crimson trace grip on it. She likes the feel of the rubber versus wood. The standard pull was pretty heavy, so I had that worked. She likes the idea of putting the red dot on the target. If it comes to that, I like that idea for her too.

In my opinion, there is not a finer self-defense, concealed carry hand gun made. Simplicity, large enough caliber and you can even shoot it in your pocket or purse. Standard load is enough, +p just makes more noise, muzzle flash and more recoil in a light weight alloy frame. The all stainless steel one is better, however I don't think they make it anymore.

I had an AirWieght, Titanium, I think it was. I sold it to a good friend that's in law enforcement, and he carries it for his off-duty weapon. His wife shoots it regularly, and doesn't like the +p ammo... . she's pretty small, too. Both his brothers bought one very similar for thier off-duty carry. My personal opinion, having shot a lot of . 38spcl rounds, I'd say a good HP bullet would do whatever you wanted it to, especially if she empties it into her target. I've shot a lot of animals with a . 38 and a whole lot more silhouettes. It's a very good round, IMO. If I come across another one, I'm instructed to bring it home. I've got several people that have shot the one I had, and many have either bought one like it or are looking, as it's a good, concealable defensive weapon.

Spend a little more and get the one with the Crimson Trace laser and she'll be delighted with it.

Product: Model 642 CT

PS - forget about the +P stuff (Too much in a small frame with a small grip)

All good info and thanks. We went to a gun store to take a look she likes the Rubber grips and the hammer less part. I kind of like the hammer less also so she can get it out of what ever without snags and if someone grabs the gun she still can just pull the trigger. We have set up some time for her to do some shooting. I think she will do fine with the 38 and if she feels real good with it step up to more power loads. I dont know how she feels about the Laser sights I dont like them kind of like telling the assailant here I come with my gun!!!!

Shootability is only part of the equation

BIG! If yer up close and personal, like "Bad Breath " distance. A laser wont make a difference.

Training Her to retain the weapon will be just as important as the shooting part! The thing I dont like about a resolver, for a PDW is that the resolver can be (#1. )rendered inoperable by grabbing the cylinder from over top the frame (if the gun is not hand cocked single action mode), (#2. ) allowing the attacker to wrench the gun towards the thumb, in a thumb break away move. (a 1911, can be unlocked by a trained attacker and removed from the hand of an untrained defender, the same way)

If the weapon is pointed straight out or in front of you, or at a low forward hold. Someone within reach, with you being distracted or not focused for some reason, can secure that weapon from an untrained person. Keep this in mind! These are certainly not all the scenarios possible, but the most likely! GregH

Personally I dont think that the EX is going to do anything but one never knows. We were out to get her out of the house. We went dancing and the yo yo came over and said hay Tex (right there he made me mad) you know who your dancing with? I said ya the prettiest girl in the place and im not from Texas I couldn't really make a racial slur on his nationality because shes and Indian also.

He asked if I knew what the Indians did to cowboys :-laf I could not longer resist the temptation. So it came down to throwing VERBAL ATROSTIES at each other and I told him if he needs to get some air we could do that and we backed away. He's a punk and POed about loosing the best catch in town. . But he did say Ill see you around when your by yourself. So who knows what that meant.

Then the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER REALLY HIT THE FAN when we got in the car and the wife asked IS SHE PRETTIER THAN ME? She just doesnt get it :confused: That's why when her Whats this post was figured out by THE FIRST GUY P***** her off. See what I have to deal with. CHICKS WHAT CAN A GUY DO WITHOUT THEM (your own laundry and cooking) :-laf OOP'S DID I SAY THAT?

Thanks for all the info on the guns I think that it will just boil down to what ever she feel comfortable with. I dont know if you have ever had a gun pointed at you but a 38 looks like the end of feild artillery when your looking at it. I have just never had the use for a in my opinion PEE SHOOTER CALIBER

BIG! WOMENS! Ya cant live with 'em and ya cant live without 'em:-laf:D!

Sounds like She has no feelings of self worth. I hate to use that terminology. But it is true. She has VALUE! To GOD and to herself. That is the lesson most of us have to learn, sooner or later!

Not recently, but yes I have! Not a fun situation! GregH

The Wife has just been pampered she's the baby and has always been Dad's special little one. The SIL is just extremely shy shes a good gal but i'm one sided on the opinion. Except the BIL they all have had the silver spoon syndrome

... But he did say Ill see you around when your by yourself. So who knows what that meant.

Without going into reasons why, I would keep this in mind.

Also from a womans stand point (you macho guys are probably pushing this being armed thing:))

The 22 Magnum Model 351C, 7 round or even the 22 LR Model 43C, 8 round would be a good option for pure self-defense. The CCI 22 Stinger rounds have a muzzle velocity of 1640 fps and muzzle energy of 191 FT. LBS. In contrast, a standard Federal 125 GR. HP 38 special round has a muzzle velocity of 830 fps and muzzle energy of 191 FT. LBS. The CCI Maxi-Mag has 1875 velocity and 312 energy:eek:

Nick

Yep, can't overlook a good . 22 mag round. More energy than a . 25 auto. And good to take game with, too..... A few rounds in the belly would make just about anyone back away...

I have seen him sense that time and both of us were without a belly of beer I afforded him the opportunity and he declined as far as im concerned CASE CLOSED.

SIL has made her choice and the rubber grip hammer less air weight S/W she shot couple hundred rounds of 38 and P she had no problems hitting what she wanted. Thanks for all thoughts on this

PS when at the range I pulled out my Para and found that I FOR ONE STILL LOVE MAX HP IN AN AUTOMATIC HANDGUN. 45 ACP
