I've always run tall skinny tires on my offroad rigs, even heavy 1-tons, and I'm thinking about going that way on my tow rig. I don't think I've seen any of our trucks on 255/85-16, so I'd love to see what you've got! Oo.

did you have to run any spacers to clear the springs or the tires themselves?



Nope - no spring spacers or wheel spacers. However, do keep in mind that I was running the aluminum Alcoa's. If you have factory steel wheels, you'll probably have to run wheel spacers on the rear duals. My duals didn't rub at all (@60 PSI unloaded, the sidewalls were approx . 75" from touching). But, I never hauled over 10k (bumper-pull car hauler) with that setup.



In the end, the taller tire with the 3. 54 gears was AWESOME on the highway. The '91 D250 I have now also has 3. 54's, but with 235/85's and a Getrag... the ole 12V is wound pretty tight for my taste doing 70mph. I'm looking at doing 3. 08's (or 19. 5's, or both) on this one.
 
If the truck came with 235's then 255's will fit with no spacers. If it came with 215's then 235's will fit again with no spacers. .

... unless you're running aftermarket wheels. ;) In which case, a truck that came with 215's will fit 255's with no spacers (such as mine did).
 
put these on my 3500, and to pull 5er,should have kept the 235`s to tall to overcome the resistance or whatever to increase the mileage. in my opinion
 
Speaking of rim width, how wide are those dually wheels, ShortB and ToolMan?



I can't remember for sure, but I believe my Alcoa's were 6" wide. What makes it possible to fit wider tires on the duals is the offset/backspacing of the aftermarket wheels.
 
I'm running BFG mudders on the back in a 255 85 16 and 285 75 16 on the fronts. I use a small spacer in the rear to keep the 255's from touching.

RW has your transfer case ever given you troubles with two different Size? That is a 7% difference and the chain has 5% slack value and 10% = a gear change
 
Robbie, what thickness of spacer are you running? And does your outer rear wheel still pilot on the OD of the spindle, like it did prior to the spacer?



I'm running Cooper ST 255's on my '99 and getting some chaffing between the rear tires. They just touch sitting unloaded with 45psi. A quarter inch spacer would do wonders, but that puts the outer wheel off the spindle pilot diameter, which causes the outer wheel to have dangerous runout...



Or is there a different year or model (Ford or Chev)dually rim I can run just on the outside to get away from this issue? edit to add: I'm interested in sticking with standard steel rims and am willing to leave the 'odd' offset just on the outer rear locations and rotate the fronts to the inner locations.

Those are all great questions! I belive my spacers are 5/16 thick but I could be wrong They might be thicker. If I remember correctly the outer wheels did not pilot up because of the spacer and I wasnt worried about it because the studs are pretty snug in the lug holes and center the wheel. I haven't had any problems with them.



If you wanted to spend the money the bolt on spacers are pretty nice too.
