OK here is my dilemma I have a 2014 3500 bought new as a cab and chassis and now has a flat bed on it ( work truck); 8/8/2018 I was traveling thru Iowa pulling a trailer to pick up a new loader. Truck said going into limp mode in 150 miles. Found a dealer in Iowa city, They said truck needed a new Catalytic Converter, work performed and on my way I went. Truck showed 167696 miles at time of service.
7/13/2020 truck said going into limp mode again, took to local dealer, they replaced Catalytic Converter as a recall. Truck showed 226217 miles
12/19/20 Truck said going into limp mode, took to dealer they said needed a Nox Sensor. Truck showed 237932 miles
Today 1/2/2021 truck said going into limp mode, have an appointment for 1/5/2021 ???. Truck shows 238690

Anybody have the same issue or any idea why this keeps happening. Just looking for some knowledge on issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok here is what's on invoice from dealers
8/8/2018 P24A2, P207F, P20EE
7/13/2020 U84 recall
12/19/2020 P003A, P229E,P2BAC
One can only hope dealer not just throwing parts at it. I told them that over the phone last conversation. Hell I can do that !

Yes that's what dealer said (turbo actuator) ,but they also said turbo doesn't present limp mode. At least that's what they say, I don't know that's why asking for opinions here

Well, the first repair was very likely a waste of time and money, CEL and derate message probably would have both cleared themselves on their own after refilling DEF with fresh fluid, driving a while and a few restarts. Replacing the SCR cat wasn't called for.
At the very least, the recall should have been performed then and you shouldn't have been charged. The recall was active during the original repair date. Probably too late now, but you should get back any money charged for that service.

Second repair for the actual recall service, just goes with the above comments.

Third set of fault codes, P003A is the actuator has exceeded learning limits, means it tried to push the VGT vanes too far one way or the other, possible actuator is starting to fail.
P229E is the NOx sensor code, related to the P2BAC, and possibly means that the EGR valve is blocked with soot.
This 3rd set of codes are not related to the earlier ones.

Ltngdrvr Thanks Yes I was reimbursed for the first converter after complaining. By the way DEF has been full all times limp mode activated. I always take a picture with cell phone when limp mode shows up. To show dealer DEF amount today was a little over half full and verify mileage this happened.

Third set of codes isn't anything to do with DEF, if any issue at all it will be EGR.
Those codes shouldn't make it go into limp mode, so not sure what's up there.
Were it mine, I would clear the codes and see if they come back before I would take it to the dealer.
And, I would never take an out of warranty truck to the dealer anyway, most expensive place to get it fixed.
Find a good independent shop.

Actually it has nothing to do with the EGR. The P2BAC code is information only to tell the technician that the EGR has been disabled because of another fault, the P229E. And because the P229E is an electrical fault only, it isn't directly related to the SCR, it is related to the SCR and DEF system because the NOx sensor is responsible to tell the ECM if the DEF/SCR system is operating properly. Thus the reason for the derate.

A burp-catching mask designed to catch methane being expelled from one end of a highly-polluting critter.
When methane levels get too high, the mask channels the gas towards an oxidation mechanism inside, which contains a catalyst that converts methane into CO2 and water, and expels it from the device. “It reduces methane’s global warming potential to less than 1.5 per cent of its original value,” Norris explains.

I'm sure they'll have a moniter for the other end someday. If it's good enough for your diesel, it's good enough for your steak-to-be. Or your kids' milk-to-be
