2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Loose brake rotor?

I Drive at any speed the passenger side is making a clunking sound, on flat or bumpy roads. I have newer ball joints, new shocks( already retorqued the bolts on the shocks), new sway bar links. I took the tires off to check all the steering components for play every thing seemed fine but the passenger side brake rotor had about 5/64" play against the back of the unit bearing while the driver side has none, you can also tap it up or move it side to side it make a clunking noise. Is this a problem with the rotor or unit bearing?





Side note if my brake pads are getting low would this cause the rotor to have play?
 
How many miles are on your wheel bearings? Bieng your rotors are pressed on i would be leaning more towards a wheel bearing failure. Be very careful in diagnosing this it could be very dangerous to drive if it in deed is that bad... have you jacked the front of the truck up off the ground and checked for any free play in the wheel or bearing? also check for a bad front universal while your in there. Your rotor should not be moving at allif theres play in it youve definitely got a problem

The wheel bearings look like they are original and u joints are newer, when I had truck up on jacks the wheel bearings had very little play when I move it side to side.
 
Yes but your wheel studs are pressed through your rotors they should not be loose something is not right there at all.
 
agreed with diesel4life, sounds like a hub. Dont do what I did first time I lost one and keep driving it until the rim falls off. Hubs are not cheap, but if thats the original one, your lucky. Ive replaced a handful on my 99. Next time I have one go out, I have the ford lockout hub conversion waiting to go in, no more unit hubs and two piston calipers/larger rotors
 
Factory specs do not allow any slop in the hubs.

Front end components are best checked with the wheels on. Jack up the truck so the the wheel is a couple of inches off the ground and use a long lever under the tire to check for play. There should not be any detectable slack in any front end component.
 
When I have the truck in the air the wheel has a little up and down,and side to side play so I think it is the, I am going to be saving up for a hub coversion kit to solve the problem.
 
New Timken hubs, with studs, can be had for about $140 each, delivered. Other hubs can be had for less than $100/pair. Way less than a conversion kit! Job can be done in a few hours if you are lucky and the hubs pop right out. Either way, you have to remove the old hubs.

I just beat this around in the Timken Catalog, I can see where one might get confused. Timken does not even have a good picture of that one.



I feel that you need a Timken HA590020 bearing for a 2WD ABS 4 X 4 8800 GVW Dodge.

wfum: The abs tone ring on a 1995 is part of the axle - has nothing to do with the hub. Not sure when they changed the abs tone ring to be part of the hub. The hub will have a couple of threaded holes for the abs sensor attachment - if you don't have abs you will not have anything to attach.

The right side unit hub was on its last leg, it was about to separate.

Good thing you changed it before it did! The next time I have to dig into my front end, Im going to drill and tap my wheel bearings so I can grease them. Ive greased them about a year ago, so I know theyre ok for now, but Im going to be a little more proactive on them I dont need them failing on me 500 miles from home :mad:
