DSS troubles

I need some help with my DSS. I see that Darin is now a member, that's great.

I got my DSS on Thursday, spent the day, 5 hrs. , could not get the bolts on the right side to line up. Left side is fine.

Friday, I dropped the sway bar all the way and then tried bolting the DSS in place, still no go.

Here's what I found after careful examination:

The right side of the end flange, welded to the square tube, hits the pivot arm of the steering rack. Not the pitman arm on the left side.

It would take some grinding to allow for room needed to get the bolts back in on the right side. I have tried every conceivable way to get this to fit. It just won't go.

I tried it with the sway bar up in place and without.

Did my 96 4 x 4 last week, took about 45 minutes, no problems.

DC, I was under the impression, they only made this device for the 4x4's... they planned on making one in the future for 2whl drives...

Here's an update I received from Darin. He first off said he was very sorry for the problem, and then said he would ship another fix, and refund my money! Holy smokes, a refund? I don't want a refund. Another bracket I would for sure accept and be willing to try it again.



A real class act is this Darin guy. Offering me both a refund and a new bracket. I am not worried about getting this straightened out and just the jesture of offering me my money back is impressive.



I don't think anyone can go wrong doing business with Darin.

I will let everyone else know what happens with the replacement.

I installed mine last week without any complications. Appears to be a well built piece of hardware. Looks good and everything lined up perfectly. Performance wise I noticed a definite difference in my steering, not as far as wander but my steering wheel does not shake up and down as much and seems much tighter on handling. The freeways here are terrible, allot of washboard like bumps that get the truck shaking all over. You can really feel it travel right up the steering shaft into your hands, almost as if someone is under there hitting it with a hammer. Now with the new DSS the jolts have been cut down quit a bit and feels much better like a new truck should. It was an excellent investment. Thanks Darin... ... ... ... .

Ordered mine from Piers, middle of last week, figured faster than the swamped source. Hopefully I get it by Friday. . I will add my . 02 afterwords. I have 115K on virgin front end, should clean it up. The expectations for this are almost as much as injectors!

I got mine in a week from Piers. I had a similar problem to DCmille290 with my idler arm, mine was BARELY touching the idler arm. I called Marv at the number listed on the instructions (What a NICE guy!) and he told me that they have had some problems with aftermarket replacement idler arms being bigger around and contacting the brace. They are allowing for this on the current models being shipped now. He very quickly offered to send me another brace, but I just knocked a little off the brace with a grinder, threw on a little Rust Stop, and I can't believe the difference in my steering! I HIGHLY recommend this product!

Like so many reading this post for the past month I could not stand it and ordered a DSS from Piers this past Friday. I had it shipped 3 day express and it came in this evening. Took it straight from the UPS driver's hand back to my shop and installed it. No problems at all (truck is a 4x4). Went on in about 30 min.

Just got back from a test drive and WOW what a difference.



I (at about 80K miles) installed a Borgeson steering shaft that helped a little, at about 130K miles I did the bearing preload adjustment that helped more and now the DSS put the icing on the cake. Wish I had had a DSS about 160K ago when I bought the truck new.



Before the DSS my truck would drive straight down the road with the steering wheel working between the 12:00 and 2:00 position. Now with the DSS the steering wheel has very little (if any) play and, unfortunately 2:00 is now straight. Turn back to 12:00 and you turn left.



My alignment is as good as you can get, so now my new challenge is to straighten out the wheel w/o messing up my alignment.

Is it possible to change the relationship of your Borgeson Shaft to reposition the steering wheel? I was considering the Borgeson until Darrin's product came along.

I have done it that way b4 (pulling the bottom connection on the steering shaft & rotating the steering wheel) but it is not as precise of an adjustment as the threaded sleeve on the drag link.



If you have not messed with your steering shaft b4 it can be a b**ch to compress and remove. I ended up having to take a saws all to cut my oem off to install the Borgeson. After cutting the oem off I put it in a vice and could not get it to slide even with some encouragement from a hammer.

I have read that you can loosen the clamp on the steering link and turn it a bit either way or another and it adjust's the steering in relation to the wheel. Does not effect alignment at all.

Got my DSS from Piers, went in fast and easy. One problem (to me), I HATE China bearings even in my roller skates. I will replace this SOON. One problem, I already lost the dirs! Anyone got theirs and can give me the bearing # and the extra info something about steel insert and grease something??

I just installed my DSS today on my '95 2500 2WD. I had a Problem!!!



A couple of months ago I needed a new Pitman Arm and a new Idler Arm, and the only place my front end guy could get them was D/C. Over $500 for both. . ouch!



So I go to put the DSS on today and it won't fit due to it won't clear the Idler Arm. I ended up grinding about 1/4 inch off of the corner of the brace so it would clear the Idler. It didn't appear that there will be any structural weaknesses from this. I didn't have to grind into the weld. Anybody else have this problem?

From the directions that came with the unit:



The bearing is a SA 205-16 (or 205-100) one inch bore self-aligning unit with metal shields and a grease hole.

Holder is a standard two-bolt flange FL 205...



Let me know if you find a better replacement unit.
