On my '01 auto ..... Happened yesterday after I took off from a stopsign... . noticed when I started to take off the transmission sounded like it was slipping bad, but it never downshifted into 1st, kept going and at the normal shift point it then shifted into 3rd but never went into overdrive. Stopped the truck and manually put it in 1st and it went to 1st gear, but as soon as you take the selector off 1, even at a dead stop, it shifts into 2nd. Checked the fluid and it had enough, was still pink and didnt smell funky. I've been manually selecting gears alot lately when I'm in heavy traffic and shifting into N so the transmission doesnt get too hot, although it has managed to get up around 220 sometimes. Normal driving it stays around 150 -180. Did something get lunched or is it as simple as a stuck checkball or electronics?? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

On my stock transmission, I had problems with a second gear launch as well. Never had an issue with O/D though. Had to replace the governor pressure sensor and solenoid. ~100 apiece from the dealer. Fixed that problem.

Been working all week so the truck sat for a few days, crawled under it yesterday just to look and see if there was anything obviously wrong such as something unplugged. Its been raining and so I unplugged what I'm calling the speed sensor on the rear of the transmission just to see if water was in it, didnt see anything so I plugged it back in. Started the truck up and went for a quick drive and the transmission now starts off in first and will shift thru 3rd but still no overdrive. However it will only upshift if i let off the gas --- meaning it will stay in 1st as long as my foot is on the pedal, as soon as I let off it will shift, same for 2 - 3 shift.

Hey Johathan, its been a long time. Does it rain in Florida? You should try living in the Northwest.

Try cycling your key 3 times on off , on off, on off, without starting it , write down any electrical codes that appear in your odometer area. It sounds electrical , if you get the codes and call us we should be able to point you in the right direction. If you have a pressure gauge put it in the governor port before you call so we can advise you how to check further. OD is controlled electronically so changes are it will turn out to be electronic.

Checked pressure and codes

Managed to get some pressure #'s tonight. Idle in gear reads 75psi, and WOT maxes out at 100psi. If I remember correctly wot sounds a little low... Checked for codes and none showed up.

Been stumped on this so I checked for codes once again and lo and behold I'm getting a P0720 and a P1693... . dont know why these werent popping up before...

P0720

Low Output Speed Sensor RPM Above 15 M. P. H.

P1693

DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM

Is my speed sensor going bad? and what is DTC???

DTC is for diagnostic trouble code. Mine did the same thing a while back and it was the governor solenoid and transducer in the valve body. I had them replaced under warranty and all is good again. It sounds like the same thing.

Thanks for the help guys, went by the dealer and the service department is closed saturday and sunday  ..... So I swung by Napa and asked them to look up the parts and all they list is the gov solenoid for $115, and what he had pulled up on the screen didnt look like any solenoid i've ever seen, it looked more like a plug. They'd have to order it and said they could have it by tuesday. I think I found the part numbers:

2001 47RE

Governor Pressure Transducer: 56028196AD

Governor Solenoid: 4617210

Should I wait for the dealer until monday or see if Napa can order the stuff through these part #'s?

One more thing you can check before replacing parts is the amount of corrosion on your battery terminals. i had a similar problem where my transmission would not down shift and when it did, it would not shift out of 2nd. Dodge boys here in Tampa cleaned up the terminals. says the corrosion caues a variance in the voltage received by the computer and confuses it causing shifting problems.

Replaced gov. solenoid and transducer, still wouldn't shift... . was running out of ideas so i went and bought a speed sensor. . bingo :). Trucks shifts like new. Thanks for the help guys
