Mechanics' opinion needed:

Ford & Navistar parting ways?

I have a question about a M/D truck cummins set up , I have run across a T 6B5. 9 out of a 1989 GMC school buss that has a Bosch VP-14 pump on it, the pump looks like a rotary vane type but mechanical. Can any one tell me any thing about this pump, can any mods be preformed on this type of a set up. I can pick this engine up for a song. I have some numbers off of the tag CPL of 0804 and engine# of 44386437 , any help would be appreciated.

I believe what you are seeing on that engine is a VE Bosch pump. They were used on 1st generations and while not as durable as the P7100, they weren't a bad pump. If the engine is cheap enough... go for it.

At UPS, we have Ford chassis package cars with Cummins power and some have the VE and the rest have the P7100. The VE's hold up pretty good considering the abuse they take. Chris

He may be right, I see b5. 9s with all types of injection pumps, stanadyne, inline bosch, rotary bosch, weird other rotary pumps. I can tell you how to bomb a pump like that, but a injection pump shop could show you the right stuff.

There was a hot shot driver here in town that had a 92 D350 that he put a pump on it that came off of a combine that had a 5. 9 in it and it would scream. People in town still talk about it now and then. He did not have a clue about hopping up a cummins, he just put the pump on it and thats how it ran.

Serial # 44386437

Model: 6Bt 5. 9-B (160)

Original fuel pump p/n 3917943, this is a ve pump.

This is a 160hp engine but I'm not sure at what rpm or what the torque rating is.

I would call Cummins and ask what the core value is on this and not pay anymore than that, of course if you can get it cheaper than by all means do it.

VE BOSCH PUMP

Hey guys thank you for the help you put me on the wright track. Hey Russell you said you could tell me how to hop up this pump? What would be involved in this kind of a modification? I checked with one of the shops close to home and they shot me a price of $1000. 00 to just take care of the pump, I don't think my rear can handle that kind of a hit. :--) :--)

The VE fueling can be adjusted up some easily on the engine. I did it on VW Diesels and it would wake them up. But not having a turbo, they would SMOKE.

VE FUELING

Hey Motorhead you say the pump can be turned up pretty ease? How would one go about it? I dont think I can go wrong for the price, the guy is telling me if I pull the thing out I can have it for $550. 00 . Oo. .

I will look at the ones at work next week(i'm on vacation this week) and get back to you. Hey for $550. , you can't go wrong!!! Does that include a trans?

Does that include a trans?

NO the guy wanted the transmission!!!!!. Hey thanks Motorhead next week will be great I phoned the guy and told him I would take it and come yank it out this weekend. Have fun on the vacation :D :D .

Hey Motorthead did you have a chance to look at the pumps at work ? I went and picked up the engine and want to go over the pump and turn her up:D

the pump can be adjusted at the anneroid on top. first mark where you are in stock position. then loosen the lock nut and turn the allen screw 1. 5 turns counter clockwise. the other place is on the engine side of the pump. now don't confuse the idle stop and the full load stop on top. just below those adjuster screws, there is a sealed screw. it might have a small cable seal or a cap on the end of it. take it off,(the seal)mark where you are at stock setting, and loosen the lock nut and screw in the screw 1/2 turn to start. ck smoke and power and adjust more if needed. on the VWs, a little went along way. Chris

Hey Chris I guies I am a little dumb about this, you talk about the "anneroid" as to wear to adjust the pump? Their is a dyaphram type of pod on top of the pump is this what you are refering to?

Yes that is the place. Do it gradual and mark or write down where you started so you can return it back to standard settings if it smokes too much. Chris

BIG THANK YOU CHRIS

Just wanted to thank you Chris for all your help, man this site and the fine folks that are on it are the BEST!!!!!! THANK,S AGAIN. :D :D :D
