Clutch hydraulics

Pulled the trans and engine yesterday after noon, today I pulled the pan off and found the back thrust to be gone from the number 6 main. I inspected the crank and it looks good the main bearing showed very little ware for 300k so I will instal a new thrust main, fix kdp put in new clutch, rear and front crank seals. Thanks for the help Mark1 and others that gave me info in my last post. Jon

You won't be able to buy just the upper half but I would only use the upper half. That way you will have the crank cradled in the very same spot as previous. If you plan to use the lower half, do them all. Realize that the crank pressure is (for the most part) down on the cap half of the bearings. Replacing just one will lift that journal ever so slightly, not good. Mark probably told you that he had some difficulty getting the upper half to roll in. You will most likely have to loosen all the main caps. But as he can attest, it can be done.

Good luck and lets us know the outcome.

Remove the fan belt too, this usually causes problems getting the upper bearings in towards the front of the motor.

You guys are starting to scare me. My truck has 227,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if I should just down the truck for the winter, pull the getrag/205 and oil pan. Rebearing the cummins, check/adjust the getrag, clutch it, and inspect the 205. :(

I would also "set" the thrust bearing, after you install it but before you torque the main cap give the crank a GENTLE tap rearward and then another gentle tap forward, this will help to ensure the the thrust faces are equal. Then torque all the caps as usual. I`ve never seen it on a Cummins (heck I`ve never seen the bottom end of one in the flesh) BUT I have run across this on different makes of engines over the years, if the thrust bearings are not perfectly aligned then one of the shells will be doing more of the "work" than the other, "setting" the bearing will reduce/eliminate this problem.

I believe I understand the concept of setting the thrust bearings but since there is only the upper half, you are not dealing with getting two matched up.

The old Allis Chalmers engines would show a wear pattern indicating the problem you mention.

And Michael, I know you like wrenching better than I do but take heart that I have 500k and no problems. And it is possible to get half a million. I am gona try for the half million without opening the engine. If I put gasoline in it one more time, it may puke on me.

Might not be a bad idea to check for crank end play but personally I wouldn't disassemble the engine "on speculation".

I often wonder what Cummins recommends. I know Cat recommends at X00,000 miles to roll in new bearings, as preventative maintence. I also know that my clutch has lots of hard miles on it, so does the getrag. The truck has been largely troublefree for such a long time, I just sometimes feel I need to give it some extra attention.

I don't know if I like wrenching more then you do... ..... It is getting harder and harder to go out after I get home from wrenching on everybody else's stuff, and then work on my own. :( I sometimes think I need to find a new job, that has no wrenching, that way it will be fun again at home in my garage.

You stole the words out of my mouth. I get so sick and tired of working on machinery all day, and then comeing home to work another 4-6 hrs on my own junk! Jon
