Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Manifold Heater Not Working

2000 Ram 4x4 5. 9. Truck starts good when it's cold and plugged in. Will start when cold (22 degrees) but runs runs very rough for 20 to 30 seconds. I carry extension cord with truck to plug in when I can but can't do that when no electricity around.



I have been told by other dodge diesel truck owners that it might be the manifold heater or the relay to the heater.



Is this a job for a real diesel mechanic or can the back yard/shade tree guy do it. If the latter can do it, has it been published in a past TDR issue.

This system is pretty easy to check. It will also sometimes set a code in the computer even though the circuit malfunction will not cause the check engine light to come on. If you don't have a code scanner go to Autozone and have them scan the computer. If you have heater circuit malfunction code then you know there is a problem. Also if you let me know your email address I will send you the page from the service manual that shows the troubleshooting procedure.

Do you get the wait light? Does your fuel pump run for 1 sec? I lost both and the dealer fixed it with a reflash, but I lost my smarty and can't reload smarty until I replace the ecm.
