I've been talking to Joe, and we're going to start planning our January meeting at his shop. I'll throw two dates out and you all tell me which you prefer.

January 21st or 28th.

There will be at least one vendor in attendance.

More on that later. I'll start a thread soon as we pick a date.

Any Jan. Saturday is good for me... . we (John Deere Landscapes) shut down on Saturdays from Dec. 17th thru March. Oo. sleep in EVERY Saturday. :( less over time hours. :{

Got marks ol Galaxy225 linear

I am pretty sure it's $60ish dollars to install connex board. I asked what else could be done with mine. They said connex board or get another radio :)

That Uniden has A LOT! left in it!

Wish I still had that 225 now. Done got back into it HARD! Got a Shooting star 225 on loan till I can afford a bigger one. Wiring it in Sunday. Hey Gapper ask 'ol Red if he's got any 4-pill linears he wants to sell cheap.

If you want you can send your radio to me or give it to me in January and I can get some more work done on it by my guy. He can get it up in the 40 watt range. ;)

P. S. I was given TWO! 36" long Grover's today that if they are in good working order I'm trading my one 24" for. :--) Oo. :-laf

They come with a lanyard too so I need to talk to Big Papa or whoever did that lanyard behind the A-pillar :-laf

Anytime. I've found that with the 10 gallon air tank I can go well over a month without refilling. That's with quite a bit of "honk time", the kids want to hear it at least twice a day. :D I don't think I'm going to put a compressor on it so if anyone's interested in this Hadley #850 compressor I bought, let me know. I think I have about $65 in it.

My wife (not used to saying that yet) has a pump for the airbags in her truck. I have no idea how much pressure it will build, but I figure that I might tie into that with a tank and have something to drive air horns... . hmmm.

Delirious from deer hunting and tracking and dragging and gutting and skinning and cutting up into bite-sized chunks, with very little sleep and no supper yet. We killed 3 today. No horns to speak of.

Ho yeah, Mark--I was just talking to Ron in KY on the 2-meter radio. He says that Richie Hendrix of Scottsville knows his way around the coal-burners. You know him?

Actually I was talking to two other 12v guys on the 2m radio. Ron in Scottsville and Jerry in Nashville whilst I was in Woodbury. :-laf

I don't know Hendrix diesel, but a buddy of mine in Scottsville has had a little "driveline replacement" work done by them.  :-laf

His name & # are in his sig over on KYDTR.

Yeah soon I'll be doing that... . found a linear... ... a big 'un..... for a good price! :-laf :D

Run a bunch of 1/0 wire today for a loaner linear :-laf ... . joker didn't even work when we got it wired up.

Sbc Fe Or Ofe

At the 400-425 hp mark would a FE or OFE be better. Is the FE to grabby for a everyday kid shuttle and ocassional trailer toter? Will it shutter on take off?

Need some input from you guys that know!! The extra hp capacity would be nice but don't want to give up driveability. I know a lot of you run them so let's hear it! :)

My FE is pretty grabby. I like it cause it holds nice and tight, but it's tempermental. You have to finesse it pretty good to keep it from shuttering. I don't drive it enough (still having major cooling problems) to be "good" with it, so it shutters from 2nd gear launches most of the time.

I haven't towed with it, but have heard they do NOT like trailers. They supposedly get jumpy with a load in tow.

Contrary to popular opinion, you can slip it pretty good between gears if you want.

All things considered, I'd buy another one. Of course this is not my daily driver, it's just a play toy. I don't think I'd want to drive it every day.

EDIT: Go ahead and call Peter and discuss it with him. I can go ahead and tell you what he's going to say though. OFE.

EDIT EDIT: Steve, if you want to come to Nashville today, I've got the truck with me, you're welcome to come drive it and check out the FE.

I still can't get the truck to come up to operating temperature. :( Any more suggestions?

Cheryl's truck is FE equipped. I don't mind it. You have to pay a little more attention to it--or learn it. The heavier the trailer the better. What you have to do is learn to slip it. Three-footing works. Use the brake to add load while engaging the clutch for low-speed work.

Anyhoo, you can drive hers as well. I think driving an FE is just a higher level of manual transmission development. It makes it harder for others (no FE users) to drive your truck smoothly. But then, why do you want them driving your truck?

OTOH, you don't have a P-pump and you don't want to tap the wire. Don't know why a 13" OFE wouldn't be perfect for your application.

Also Steve--No key--she never used one.

Up to temp? Is there a functional thermostat in place? You've got to drive/load it. It'll never warm up sitting. Details?

Wade, I think I'll take you up on the offer to drive (rawhide) the wife's truck! :D Maybe make a comparison with your 24v. Maybe Wendsday morning if your not busy. Thanks Andy but cannot come to Nashville today. Anybody else got a clutch opinion? I am ready to go up around 100hp real soon and can get a good deal on a FE.

Here's the thread I've been working in:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143847

I drove it to work today, 35 miles, it's blowing heat out the vents, but the engine water temp never gets over 140*. I drove it 70mph all the way here, EGT's cruising at that speed were about 800*. I thought that was a little high too... :( I've put three t-stats in it. Currently it has the latest part numbered Cummins T-stat. I boiled it and cooled it to ensure that it opened and closed properly before installing it. The upper radiator hose gets "HOT/WARM", not HOT. Meaning, I can hold on to it all day. It get's stiff with pressure, and I can relieve that pressure by releasing the vent on the rad cap. Bubbles and geysers out of the overflow tank when I lift the vent. I guess it's still got some air in it from the freeze plug loss debacle. either that, or it's getting air introduced in the system somewhere... (SHRUG)...

Also leaks a little from the petcock when it's pressureized (after driving it a while).

Steve,

I am running an OFE in my truck. Pleased with mine. Tow a 20' tag along trailer on occasion. No issue. You are welcome to drive mine and test it out.

Jay

Steve I'd definitely go with the OFE at that power level. I don't think you're gonna have enough torque to make an FE play nice. I don't know where I'm at right now, anywhere from 430-450 depending on how much air I'm getting, and the OFE holds 100% and drives like a stock clutch.

Peter told me that the OFE would not have any problems holding up to just over 500HP - said he underrates his clutches. That was good enough for me. IMO, at this power level, there's really no other choice.

I predict Mark will chime in with his OFE recommendation too.

Most people that have driven both say that an all-out dual disk SBC drives better than your standard FE.

The OFE is a great all around clutch. The FE used improperly will damage it. When towing with the FE you need to start out in first gear all the time. The FE is not designed to slip much when taking off. Also downshifting to too much RPM's can damage them. Not long after I sold my red 94' the guy broke all the springs out of the disc assembly. He towed 4 to 5K most all the time. Peter at Southbend said that was the wrong clutch for his application and I installed an OFE and he has been happy since. The OFE has an organic side to allow smoother engagment.

Geez, I get busy over the weekend working and you guys put up 3 pages of stuff for me to go back and read!!! I have forgotten who it was that started the talk about the CB, but Mark is right, I have had the guy in Gallatin work on mine and it was a little Uniden and he tweaked it real good!!!

Andy, I surely wish you all the best of luck in gettin her fixed, but I don't have one single clue as to what you could try, I have never said that I was much of a mechanic!!!

I have my own question about the CTD. As most of you know, she all stock, except for the exhaust, and I am wanting to know if there is anything that I can do that will boost HP and mileage without adding any boxes or anything. I have heard that advancing timing or pushing the throttle plate (I think that's what it's called at least) will do this, but I don't know. Also, if someone that knows how could help me out sometime, maybe at the Jan meeting. I will have to get back with you, usually I have drill with the National Guard on the 3rd weekend of the month. I will double check the list tonight and get back with you on that one.

Thanks in advance for any assistance with this!!!

SHAY, all you have to play with on an 04. 5 is air in and air out.

h. p. comes from boxs and injectors. all the other stuff you are talking about is for the 12 valves. may they R. I. P.

JOE

OK Joe, the air out is taken care of, what can you do for air in? It would be after X-Mas, so don't rush on it. I don't know what kind of set up is best so if you know about, pick out a few options if you would please!!! Thanks man.

Shay,

For the air in, you can either do an AFE intake, a Scotty Systems intake, an airaid intake or a DRC intake. The first two are the most common. I'm sure there are others that I might have missed. But by and large, the AFE or the Scotty are the most common.

After that and BEFORE you do any other modifications, GAUGES are a must.

For my money, since you don't want anything radical, I'd go with the Edge Juice and Attitude Monitor. That gives you about 100 ponies and your gauges. It's in the neighboorhood of $750. It does Fuel pressure, timing and duration. Smooth reliable power.

The last meeting out at Meachams, you probably remember the other white 3rd gen dually. The guy I sold my RAMifier (fuel pressure box) to. We stacked it with his TST PowerMaxCR (Timing/duration). That was a VERY aggressive stack. Lots of power. Smokin fast dually. That stack would run about $1000.

Plan on $250 for air, then $250 for gauges, then $whatever (TS, TST, VanAaken, Edge EZ, etc... ) for power.

or $250 for air and $750 for the Juice/Attitude.

DLeno has been doing a good writeup on all the different power boxes. It has been a continuing article in the last 3 or 4 issues of the TDR Magazine.

For the January meeting at Underwood Tire, there'll be at least one vendor there. Might save your pennies. There might be some special show pricing on stuff.

I envy you man... . I wish I had my 3rd gen back and was on the "turn the key and drive train" rather than the "turn the wrench and pray train" ;)
