It clearly shows that the wear occurs on the top bearing more than the bottom bearing from shearing forces.

"I agree"

Shearing forces from the piston being slammed down harder againts the connecting rod on the downstroke are a fact, not fiction.

"I agree"

The pictuers are to show the shearing can occur from a thin oil even with 30,000 miles on the clock.

"That is where we part company, they may show that, they may not,but I have seen worse wear with thick oils, and you won' t tell us what it is out of. Like I said, that wear we are seeing may have happened with initial startup. "

High timing pushes on the piston harder, this increases the shearing effect you see in the picture.

"I agree"

What do you not get?

"I still don't got you figgered out. '

Although the amount of fuel your 180 pump pushes, the effect to your engine is probably minimal.

"I agree"

It was out of a Toyota car with 30,000 miles on the clock. Using 0/30 engine oil. You can figure out the brand type.

After all the back and forth I gotta add that my SouthBend has been a great clutch and I dont hink that with my trailer (8000lbs) I would want to have a clutch like the one you have in your truck.

If I was pulling a sled I would have the safety issues addresses first like the bell housing being made from aluminum and the thin sheet metal between me and the clutch assembly.

Some kind of steel plate between me and the clutch and maybe a trans blanket (Kevlar)

Young kids that attend many of the events as spectators know not what kind of damage can occur when/if a clutch blows up and it appears that some of the pullers do not either. Lets hope they have an epiphany on this subject as well.

Don~

0W-30 replaces all 30 wts in gas engines, it is an incredibly tough lubricant, all climate.

You picture shows nothing. I have seen a set of rodbearings without a mark on them, except one. Overtorqued or something. A piece of metal from factory assembly, perhaps.

Are you saying they cranked the timing on a Toyota? Why was it tore down?

It is funny I have customers every day with race engines calling and saying the bearings are fine, we are putting them back in, awesome oil!

No I don't have any Toyota pictures to comapre-they are all still running.

I do have a little GEO that was run OUT of dino oil at 36,000, we flushed it and poured 0-30 in. 129,000 later, runs great! Yearly drains.

And Don, you guys who are sitting on the outside looking in about truck pulling, or any event for that matter, are pretty preachy for porch sitters.

Is it just me, or are you against everything I do or say???

Gene,

I like the sport of sled pulling or tractor pulling. It is ok in my book.

I just felt the safety issue was kinda overlooked, thats all.

Don~

The street trucks always tend to get overlooked, but how many people have you heard getting hurt at a truck pull?

It has come a long way, although there is still backyard tracks that are just asking for it.

Why can't we all just get along ??

I like Peter's Clutches. My Dad broke Peter's Clutch (Con OFE MU 0090)

Why? My truck isn't his truck,, He's use to stock power and idiot proof stuff. If you don't Match RPM right when trying to pump 375RWHP and "pop" the clutch, something has got to give, I'm glad the Clutch broke instead of the input shaft. (I think that this type of thinking is also the type of thinking DTT uses,, Something has to give)

A couple days later he did the same thing with a brand new OEM clutch. (After the transmission was run dry, and had broken a SBC) Except the stock clutch didn't let go before the NV4500 let go of a tooth on the input shaft. I drove about 35 miles with a chipped input shaft tooth. Limping the truck back to my trusted Auto shop the input shaft decided it would spin no more. The rear tires locked up and I slid to a stop.

A couple of calls to Peter,, and He warrenteed my clutch, even though I am overweight, I got his 5-speed conversion clutch (Excellent clutch BTW) a little $$ but does excellent at putting power down,, and no noise at all, comparable to a stock clutch except it just holds to no end.

He also gave me a number to a good transmission shop (Blumenthals) and I got myself a 6-speed transmission.

I may not be Sisqel & Eibert but I give Peter Two thumbs up.

Go with the SBC 5-speed conversion clutch, and if you ever break that 5-speed go for a 6-speed You won't believe the difference, it hauls just SO much better.

TDK< Yup, You read right,, I now have 2 more forward gears than you do. :D

What a combination, SBC 13" clutch and a 6-speed.

I also have dual lift pumps, and check my VP44, Gauge question thread in the Engine/Drivetrain forum.

After reading this rather exhaustive post on this subject one can clearly see that somebody who has never done any pulling has such strong saftey opinions,,Don M you really amaze me at times with your depth of knowledge of a subject/subjects you have never participated in let alone the saftey precautions involved in the sport,,Since we all know this is a fledgling class and still in its infancy there will certainly be some missed safety items and that would partly be due to no one manufacturing them,,MMMM,now lets see here,a call to my local speed merchants and their subsquent call to the manufacturers of "blow proof'' bell housing reveals that NONE are a direct bolt in for our NV's,so where does that leave us stick guys????,,Nothing made, nothing to use, but, you can certainly tell us of the perils of what will happen without one,,So the next step is a transblanket(which is NOT made for any stick car/trucks)and our ability to modify it to fit over a transmission that is not intended to be used on,how safe is that???,,Want to go further Don???,,Safety is a MAJOR issue with all types of sanctioning bodies no matter what the sport, one would certainly have to know that as soon as the CORRECT piece is available and is SFI approved it will be made mandatory for use pulling and for those diesel drag race hotrodders(oh,yes both NHRA and IHRA mandate a "blow proof bell at certain e. t. s),,Now to your next comment about HP,seems I believe that you said something about Gene's truck and the DRE not being able to hook because he "slipped it" and it was due to him being underpowered for the task at hand(ya know, someone else chimed in on the lack of hp also),,I believe, and without the benefit of the search engine working properly I'll just have to look over my notes,Gene after a recent dyno run with the Phord contingent that are/is a member here he had dyno'ed at near 363 hp,so do they think he was WAY under 400 hp,,I believe that even with all your money spent on "trick'' parts your not much over that,,One would only have to wonder if these who consistently preach the safety issue of these clutches feel safe at hp levels near/over 400 with ANY CLUTCH assembly and no blowproof bell(yes before anyone makes the comment about my little truck and its bell,I never said I feel safe without one),,Reality check here also, how many of you automatic transmission guys feel safe without a blanket on,since they also are not made for the 47RE and again modifing it will compromise safety,,So whats next, they jump on them and mandate the auto guys to a SFI approved trans case,oh rats, they don't make them yet either,,Once again a honest question asked by a member here gets blown out to a product bashing squabble and does not allow the man to form his own opinion,,Its amazing that people can criticize a product they have never driven and only comment on how bad it will be to their equipment and then bring up the warranty issue,,Just like the auto threads, clutches are a owners choice, doesn't matter if they are SBC,Centerforce,DRE,Mitchell,McCleod,ABC or XYZ as long as the owner is content that his product choice will do what it wants,,ALL clutch manufacturers have their respective problems in some way, from customer service to shoddy products, there are problems in all of them, none are perfect they each have their weak points and downfalls,,Most of the time we only hear of the good but what about those who have had bad experiences and chose not to post or tell of them,EVERY one of the manufacturers have those and not one can deny that,PERIOD,,So I'll end my windy rambling here with this, after driving Gene's truck with Mitchells clutch I'd have to say it will do what it is intended to do,HOOK,,As for streetability,it may be a little on the noisy side and hook hard at times, but,I'd live with that to know when you want hook it will,,This was not the first Mitchell clutch I've driven they have both driven the same,,His choice ,his truck, give him honest answers not scare tactics...

P. S. -Joe D and the Famous" Sickly"-Since we easterners can only hear of this famed 609hp shot on a dyno and you criticizing the way the clutch was used in Gene's truck ,riddle me this??-How is it that with all the NOTED hp of the truck you drive, we(any member)only hear, read, see photo's of and all know it was done on a dyno but can not ever see it put to use anywhere else under load??????Just a honest question.....

Peter and South Bend have taken care of me!!!!!! There clutchs a great and there customer service even better!!!!!!

Thanks Peter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob? Is that you?

Oh no it is Drawson!!!!

Maybe Don M, Peter and Joe are concerned with this safety issue because they are building safety parts.

Yup, SCARE the customers in the door!!LOL:confused:

Glad I got an auto. :D

Seriously guys I am learning alot from this thread, I know most don't like this type but you always see the best that everyone involve has. Bringing there A-game so to speak.

You sandbagger you :p Heck, I get 400 HP out of my ETH!!

We know you'll never admit to what you've got, but congrats to your newly BOMBed monster Ram, Gene.

Good luck!!!

Peter

What a guy that Peter, He shoot that clutch down to the ground. Lets boot him like we did to BillK.

Gene,

I like posting on manual transmission threads as much as you like posting on auto threads, backwards huh?
