Ask your next Lyft or Uber driver if the box on 4 wheels they have is leased from they company. The box on 4 wheels is replaced around 100K miles. Talk about the ultimate vehicle subscription.
Tesla is blazing this trail. You want to use all of the battery you're hauling around?! Well, Cough It Up!
Even SXM is becoming obsolete on one radio per subscription satellite as their own app is better. Satellite is only useful in places where cell phone data is limited by signal, etc. Yet their app allows via unlimited data say 3 vehicles on one phone vs. 3 radio subscriptions. Even though the low compressed audio quality is that I still enjoy my subscription. If nothing else it's a white noise wall.
OnStar Had one advantage of a stronger transmitter to allow cell phone calls in areas a normal handheld cell phone wouldn't work. The "buy minutes" vs. unlimited was already obsolete in 2010 when we used it. Our last GM vehicle, a mobility van, was ordered with OnStar hardware disable as we didn't need another battery draining parasite running all the time. Said another way OnStar offers NOTHING of value rather just dead weight and another module to go bad possibly taking down the vehicle's communication bus.
When the Analog Cell Service went digital the old Analog OnStar units will attempt to drain the battery looking for a signal that's no longer there.
The Obsolete Technology problem also affected say RAM pickups when 3G went away.
Garmin already includes a lifetime map update so let's skip the insane $2000 NAV option on the build sheet. Easy warranty to just swap out a Garmin vs. Wait two weeks to get into dealer service, order parts, etc, when "What could possibly go wrong?" does.
"We turned off your heated seats unless you pay up deadbeat" may not matter to me in Phoenix, AZ, but, taking candy away from a baby: it sure puts H A T E toward the vehicle maker. Esp. if another vehicle maker doesn't require subscriptions. If you want to start a real fight: deal with technical support because "... Even In The Future Nothing Works!" Yeah Deal with automated computer on the phone or lowest bidder who's first and second language isn't English.
All this for just heated seats? Push a button worked before without needing a connection to The Borg!
I can see it now: "I don't want all the subscriptions and PROBLEMS! Order me a Tradesman!" Even then it's not exactly perfect for electronics, but, a lot less risk. I have some glitches now and then like No Start till I reinsert the key, but, no blinding at night Blue Screen on The Etch A Sketch some have encountered with newer and higher option levels.
