Moving from 98.5 to possibly 2016

Idle issues.

Mopar or Genos. Genos is $40 for shipping to Alaska. Then there’s Cummins Northwest. Fleetguard AF 27684 here in town. Will call for prices tomorrow

Ordered an air filter from Genos, said it was back ordered for a couple months. It arrived in a little over a week. Looks like it needed changed. 32,000 miles.

Cummins wants $50 for an air filter local pick up . I changed mine after 10-12 k and lots of dirt roads . It was pretty bad. Also had lots of smaller bugs and fireweed fluff etc. Filters are doing their job I guess. My old 99 has a k&n wash out dry and recoil type. It was always dirty with fine dirt but never bugs and other heavy matter. Makes me wonder

Very different air box intake setups. The 2022 pulls air from the grill, so bugs and such easily make their way into the air box.

Whatever you do, don’t put a K&N in the new truck.

I will never use an oiled K&N filter again. I did it on one vehicle, and it fouled the MAF sensor and I noticed that the intake tube had dust in it. Never again.

An engine, especially a diesel engine is worth using the paper filter elements on.

Yes they do; however; the 4.5 gen trucks seem far more particular about air filters and flow in regards to DPF soot loading estimates.

You know, I never had any indication that the filter was that dirty. So either the filter looks bad but was still able to pass air effectively, or my 2022 isn't that fussy on filter efficiency. The only thing that prompted me to look at the filter was 1 - The maintenance schedule says to check it at 30,000 miles, and 2 - I got a check engine light during an 1100 mile trip. The light came on, and went back off after 4 or 5 restarts. When I got home I pulled the code P0402 and it had something to do with EGR excessive flow (?). Said the fault had occurred 1 time. Googling it, someone said to check the air filter. Not sure if that's what caused the check engine light or not.

I visually inspect mine every oil change. Is it difficult to access on the 4th Gens?

On my work 2020 Cummins it requires a screwdriver or nut driver like on my EcoD. For some reason both trucks are sometimes a PITA to get the top cover re-aligned.

Both trucks are what I call road vacuum cleaners.

IN 2009 we drove from San Diego to Oregon up 1 and 101. A CHP followed me for many miles. I was smoking a bit out back with my Smarty set on 30 hp. If I got stopped I was going to tell him it was a faulty injector and I would replace it when I got home. What gives? I got home 1000 miles later and removed the air filter cover and the filter was super dirty. It had 16K on it. As soon as I put in a fresh filter the smoke stopped. I hear owners going 30K and aside from a freeway I don't see how they do it?

From where does yours draw air?
My ‘04 does so from the fenderwell.
Stays pretty clean. Texas caliche or not.

Cut the engine fan (HVAC to Off) on the worst.
Slow down.

The “Home Depot CAI” is a no-go for me.
The fenderwell is pretty good at having the dust drop out.
Investigate and maybe add some sealing.
