Muffler question

I would like to put on a muffler that fits in the original space, does not require cutting or welding but would allow more gas flow and sound better than stock, but not too load that what was gained with the quieter engine is lost. Has anyone found anything like this that might be what I am looking for? At some point down the road will probably replace the entire exhaust system, but for right now, I just would like to find a better muffler.
