Well now there really isn't a reason to go to MM. No sled pulls, and no DD trucks to beat up on. :(

ATS was going to dominate anyway, with the triple charger set up, I don't blame DD to drop out, how can they compete against that?

HVAC, Sled Puller, et al,

Thanks for the info and the link in the comp forum. Good info.

HVAC, if you're really moving to Morgan, the SLC area will have gained a nice asset!

But back to Kat Diesel's original question: what are the do's and dont's of running on a Mustang (and/or DJ) dyno?

We found at our dyno day I refered to that the best approach on the DJ was to get into 4th gear on our 5-speeds (5th for 6 speed, and 3rd lockup on autos) and at about 1400-1500 revs mash it to the floor. That was also the technique used on the Edge's Mustang in Ogden.

Running the truck through the gears like you were racing was NOT the way to go. Apparently, that process got the mass rolling and didn't load the engine properly when you hit "1-to-1" gear. Comments/further elaboration?

-Jay

About the only time you want to run through the gears is if you don't have a way to keep the TCC locked. Most of us have a lock up switch so we use the single gear starting from about 1500. I think the lower you start the better you spool your turbo.

Kat,

It's been 2 days, and should have been 2 sets of injectors... . well???

No kidding! He never called me either. Maybe he got stuck working. We had a fair amount of snow here also so it may have got canceled.

He better check in soon or I'm going to the dyno shop. It's only 6 blocks from my house! :p

He made 384 hp and 7?? tq, he thought he smelled rubber too. He didnt get to dyno the next day due to late injector install and it was snowing.

Well first off let me say I am in between moving right now, thats why I am scarce this week. And yes I dynoed DDIII's on Tuesday = whopping 385hp. The operator said 5500lbs was the max he could enter, and my peak power is up around 3100rpm. Run lasted all of about 5. 5 seconds. Everyone else I have talked to says you can enter more then 5500lbs so guessing hes got outdated software or something? I dunno. Its a single roller... . I didn't see tire smoke but I did smell rubber. Personally I think he was trying his gasser mentatlity on it, hes kind of set in his ways since hes the only dyno around. I run faster times but each time I dyno my HP shrinks... ... neat trick huh? One thing I thought was odd, was he showed me he could load it, so hes liek welp theres a 15% grade, I was like um ok (was just cruisin) and didn't really bog me just made boost rise a few pounds ..... this was injectors only..... in 3rd gear warming things up, I just found that odd didn't take much throttle to keep going same speed.

As for the new injectors, yes they are in, I had to get new connector tubes (one too many injector swaps) so it took a bit longer then anticipated, and by Wed afternoon it started snowing. I canceled the 2nd dyno run, didn't feel like spending another $110 that day only to be told "I'm wrong about this and that" regarding my truck and the hp it should have. Its stopped snowing but the roads are still questionable for me to go play much over 10 to 15lbs of boost.

So I don't have much else to say other then hopefully I can find some dry roads tommorrow afternoon sometime... ... ..... its driving DOn M nuts with the suspense of my opinion :cool: Just a bad week to get them with moving and the snow :{

Give me a ring if you have time.

I was down there when you posted this on Tuesday.

When Scribner opens we need to hit the track and see how it fairs, its obvious dynoing is fruitless for me. I honestly wouldn't waste the $$$ dynoing your turbo diesel truck there.

What was your dynojet run???

Better find as much weight as you can to load in the bed.

If you have time you might experiment with running on only *ONE* of the rollers on each side.

The last two Dynojet runs were 445hp and 442 that was TX and KC on "regular 248C's"... ... ... only problem is peak power was @ 3400rpm and rising.

Run lasted all of about 5. 5 seconds

Got that one beat, try 1. 5... ok maybe 2. 0, think I had the same problem... . 60-110 in that time... yea right! But I can say the graph was as smooth.

This comment will get me in trouble I should just put my foot in my mouth but oh well!

EJ is "DA MAN" when it comes to gas motors. He made my buddies Supercharged Durango 360 gain 43 hp with just simple tuning.

But he's NOT a diesel person. IMHO his dyno can't handle the TQ or he does not know how to operate it for trucks. Everyone I know that goes down there with a diesel has been disappointed. My buddy with the crazy PSD got told that it has over 1000 tq but whatever he does to measure the TQ would only go to 1000. I looked up the tech sheet on his dyno and it's higher than 1000.

I guess there is a big rig place up in Sioux City than does dyno runs on bigger diesel stuff. I could get the name of the place and maybe they can help you out more. Only other good places I know of are way down in Oklahoma and Texas.

If you need a warm place to work on the truck I have a 20x40 heated shop. It's got almost everything but a lift. Just let me know in advance. ;)

As soon at it warms up the strip is a done deal! We can put it on the trailer and tow it up. That really scares the guys who drive their stuff up for some reason. :D

Your comment won't get you in trouble with me, I'm sure hes good with the gas motors, its just obvious hes not a diesel guy ;) Just the way it is is all.....

The closest Dynojet I know of is in KC (been there about 5 times)..... but that one gives me 445hp @ 3400rpm :) Least it did last time. The one in Sioux City is Diesel Specialties..... trouble is they can't go over 80mph with that dyno. I already checked, I spend time at Diesel specialties here in town since they are a Bosch shop and all... and supposedly sometime getting Insite... ... so just makin friends :)

I'm done (I think) with it for now until we can race it a few times (unless something breaks)..... I want to run with these injectors and single turbo... see if I have my 12's yet. Thanks for the offer tho I will keep it in mind. Just waiting for Scribner to open.

How far you want to drive??

There is a really good diesel performance (3/4T & 1T Exclusively) shop 500 miles up the road with a duel roller 200mph+ DynoJet at Northwood ND. Mikes Custom Truck Builders.

We have had a couple meets there and dynos. The owner does all the driving and is a extremely knowledgeable and consistent dyno operator. He seems to get them most out each truck. He does lots of perfomance stuff and has had higher HP trucks run. You might be at the high side???

All interstate straight north 7 hours. He would treat you right if you wanted to try stuff as He is really into performance stuff and looking for new things to learn and try.

His hobby is tractor pulling (owns a sled). Has offered to do a truck pull this summer is enough interest is out there!

Kat Diesel, what method did the dyno operator use to get his RPM reading? Did he use an inductive pickup on an injector line?

That figure is off or maybe you have a 2-stroke diesel!;)

Revive the topic

Our "local" dyno is a Mustang 1750. I've run on it a couple of times, and each configuration registered about what it was supposed to. (stock, DDUFM 3x5, 5x5, then DD3's only, DD3's 3x5, DD3's 5x3, DD3's 5x5. )

The number on the sheet is 5500#, but was told that they can add more weight to the rollers. We don't build street boost or temps on it. We drive our own vehicles on it. I run from 40-80mph in 1:1 (I could tell you the R's, but the sheets are in the truck and it's wet out and my shoes are off).

I'll probably experiment with overdrive and more weight in the rollers next time. Back to back runs should make the point. Then I'll try overdrive. While we've yet to have tire slippage problems, I'm sure that heavier rollers might stress that point, so we might tote some sand bags along.

I saw a 600+HP gasser run with slicks and no tire slippage. I expect we'll have a couple of trucks just over 500 next dyno meet.

RPM is picked up photo-electrically off the main pulley--which becomes a problem when we fill the place with smoke. :D
