16 3500 4x4 dually aisin trans shifts good but feels like alot of play between shifts like a bad u joint? Possible shaft going bad or? Been doing it since I bought in 17. 78,000 miles? Worst ram I've bought.

Well said, I feel the same way. I spent a fair amount of time in the saddle this weekend and can tell you I miss the 68rfe. The Chrysler trans shifts so much better than the Aisin.
Interesting. My first impression of the 68rfe on our 2018 was it seemed old school compared to 8sp ZF in the 2015 eco diesel it replaced.

The 68RFE is a slush box compared to the Aisin. You have to remember the Aisin is a medium duty truck transmission, if your thinking it should shift like the family sedan, then you got the wrong truck. I hated my 68RFE in my 2012, unlock the converter then shift to the next gear, or unlock the converter when it down shifts. Always felt like it wasn't totally engaged. The Aisin doesn't do that to my knowledge, or at least I don't feel it or see it on the tach. When towing it is always in the right gear, not like the 68RFE.

It just seems clumsy, it seems to lug the Cummins in town, locking out 6th gear makes a huge difference.
Towing it seems more comfortable, and that is what it will do 80% of the time. I am getting used to it, and as long as its reliable it can do its thing. From what I've read it is so all good!

Run towhaul in town will to be in a higher gear in town, and you will not have a lugging feeling.

I have owned both and loved both. I find it entertaining, some Love the AISIN and some Love the 68 or they hate them.

Run TH and you will never be in the "wrong gear".

Mine never lugs, although it'll run pretty low RPMs. Lugging occurs when your press on the accelerator and nothing happens. Mine wakes up real fast when I step into it. Running at low RPMs is how these beasts make better fuel mileage. Just another perspective.

EDIT: IMHO, Cummins AND Aisin are the best things that EVER happened to Ram.

Interesting on lugging. My first Cummins. I need to use tow haul more, I Did notice lower rpm in 6th towing was better mileage than 5th at 65 mph. It did seem to me to be lugging at 1500 rpm with the ATC on level low wind towing. But that maybe normal.

I used to tow 62mph with my 68rfe with 3.42's in 6th combined 29k. I found I it gave slightly better mileage by leaving it in 5th. Interestingly the same RPM as my current DRW with 4.10's in 6th.

I was getting about the same mileage in 5th gear with a 16K 5th and the 8K TT at 60 MPH. This fall I started towing the TT at 66 MPH in 6th and mileage improved.

Agreed, the Cummins has a pretty nice power band, especially when towing. Right now, my 2017 Ram 5500 with 4.88s is giving me the same mileage towing as my 09 4500 with 4.44s. Biggest difference, the 09 locked out 6th in TH and the 17 has all 6. Both run 65 mph @ 2100ish RPMs in TH. Only time I see a difference is running solo 75 or 80. But at 95+% duty cycle towing, it doesn't matter that much. I'm happy.:D

I'm thinking our 8klb ATC is not much of challenge for this truck. I'm used to being at the upper limits with a half ton, and first takaaway was- you idiot why didn't you do this years ago? It is fun to pass on passes and enjoy the scenery more coming down. I honestly thought we didn't need it.

You tow that fast in CA?

Have not been in California except the NE corner in recent years. I normally would run with the trucks on 99 in the central valley which was around 59 MPH. The crazy part of California is that short wheel base box trucks can run 70 with the car traffic and they are one of the most unstable vehicles on the road. We may go to the coast North of San Francisco next spring on the way back to the NW. I spent a year and a half in Point Arena while in the Coast Guard in the late 60's.
