I have been hearing a squeak every time I stop. What kind of oil should I use on the brake pads?

I am mechanically inept and need help!

Red,
Don't know how many miles you have on your '01, or how you drive, but if you hear a squeal it may be time to look at your pads. . It may just be dust causing your squeal, but chances are it is not that easy. . If the pads look o-kay, I have used a brake cleaner from NAPA, it comes in a spray can and one can should do both sides of the front. .

You say that you are somewhat challenged by "wrenching" activities, but if you have ever changed a tire on the front of your Ram, you can take the front wheels off and look at the front pads. . They should have at least one-quarter inch left on both the inner and outer pads. . If not, better think about changing them or have them changed.

I bought Carbon Metallic replacement pads at AutoZone, and they are guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. . I have had them replaced once under the guarantee, and the counter guy didn't even blink, but I have several miles on my Ram.

Good luck!!

Rob. .

Red,
What kind of oil ? thats like asking which is better, mineral or synthetic. You will get answers from both sides of the fence. One thing I would concerned about is the warranty. I'm sure you don't want to void your warranty and the way to avoid that is to use only Dodge approved semi synthetic brake pad oil. You can only get this special oil from your local Dodge dealer and my understanding is that it is on backorder. Seems to many of those Dodge techs were applying more to the left pads than the right hence the pull to the right problem so many of our trucks have, or was it to much to the right pads, I cant remember. Any way there is a TSB on the problem, think its TSB 00-BS-01 or something like that. Just make sure you get the right stuff. there are two different part#s one for front disc and another for four wheel disc. good luck

If it's smell fuel, bring it over!!

WD-40 works great! The only problem is it does not last very long, it is best applied while brakes are warm and truck is moving. I don't advise the driver trying to do this on his own, its' best to have passanger (wife/girlfriend) apply. One last tip, slow to at least 30 mph before asking passanger to spray brakes!!!

Red,
They're all bull *&^%ing you. You do not need to buy any fancy stuff at the Dealer. I use my old oil after a change. Just turn you wheels hard to the left and dumb it on your brakes. Turn hard to the right and repeat. Mine have been squeak free since I did it.

I sure hope you guys are just pulling our legs and not putting any thing on those pads other than brake clean.

red, just to clarify, everybody here is BSing you,you should never put oil on your brakes. Some people go as far as using alcohol to wipe greasy finger prints off the brake rotor when working in that area. Most of the time dust is what causes the squeak,on my truck it goes away once I get off of dirt roads for a couple of miles. If it is a totally obnoxious squeak that makes folks turn their heads you can use products from the auto parts store that go on the back side of the brake pad, downside is that you have to remove the pads to apply it. By the time you go that far it often is just as easy to replace the pads, many are made not to squeak. Use no oil on brake surfaces. I hope you were joking to begin with.

Now I know why you have those huge custom made running boards on your truck. you mite want to add a couple a grab handles to the front fenders, hate to see you lose your applicator, or maybe it would be best to run a couple of hoses down to the brakes with an in cab control.

Often the sound of squeaky muffler bearings is mistaken for brake squeak. #ad
Remove the muffler and see if it goes faster and jumps higher. #ad

Thankfully we're ending this discussion. . I was afraid we'd see someone post their oil report which proved that brand X was better at reducing brake squeal DB levels.

This was a funny thread though . . and hope the original post was in fun!

Michael

The sqeak is caused by your front pads moving(unless they are wearing out) about on the calipers, as illflem suggested they make a glue compound for this. To be applied to back side not front.

Don't feel bad red1ton there seemed a few others that thought you could oil your brake pads. Hope all of were just spinning your wheels.

Hey thanks for all of the good advice. Since I could not find the semi-synthetic brake pad oil, I used the engine oil from my last oil change.

The squeak is now gone but I still have a stopping problem. I use the exhaust brake to slow me down to around 28 mph. I normally use a tree or telephone pole to finish the stop. The front bumper is not holding up well and the front license plate fell off the other day.

When I back up I try to RAM into something using the trailer hitch. It is hard to line up the stopping post when I am backing up.

Next time, I will add some sand to the oil. Maybe that will help with the new stopping problem.

Is this brake problem covered under my 10000000 mile warranty?

Don't forget to do regular analysis on the "brake pad oil", that is the only way to know when to add more or replace it completely.
