My first Ecodiesel

I just bought a 2017 Outdoorsman Ecodiesel as my two 5.9L trucks were getting up in age and milage. I'm driving more miles now too so better fuel economy won't hurt either. I've read lots on the engine failures and Ecodiesel problems. I've never had a new truck and have no idea how FCA would like me modifying my truck right from new. I'm looking forward to learning lots and hope it works as well as my other trucks have.

I am sure FCA will not mind if you modify your truck,however I would not expect warranty coverage

FCA is saying engine failures were caused by to thin engine oil (5w30). They are/have sent out notices that owners should use 5w40 oil.
FCA wouldn't like it and would loose your engine waranty. The epa would't like it , unless the the new hp component items were carb certified.

Executive order allowed the 2017 out of Jail, The ED is surround by controversies ,The DOJ filing May 23 on CAA COC violations are close to 3+billion in loses to FCA, In the compliant Backwards compatibility was NOT mentioned, if FCA is found to have violated CAA laws, You may find yourself with a diminishing value.

I have never seen where FCA said too thin oil caused engine damage?????

I know I know no manual transmission available. My wife's Durango has dial shifter so I'm kinda used to it even though I don't drive her car much.

I believe it was in the magizine two issues ago. They were not going to put out as a tsb but were going mail notifications to owners.
My understandig why they were doing this was because enough eco diesels were throwing ,spinning bearings, losing the bottom end and fca determined it was because of the thin oil.

I never saw FCA admit any failures were caused by thin oil in any publication or tsbs

I currently have over 108k miles on mine without a single CEL. I did have the SCR replaced in the first year per a TSB, other than that it runs like a top.

When I bought a 79 omimi 024 ,82 buick regal , 78 ford van (460) 88 ford van 7.5/ 460 and early wheels 71 corola, 71 charger, 68 opel cadett wagon I put 20w50 gtx or valvoline. 10w 30 great in far up northern states but on mid and southern states you need a thicker oil.

My point was FCA never said that .All speculation from consumers.Too many failures?for sure.

On my oil fill cap it says 5w40. Manual recommends Rotella T-6. I sure hope it gets better mileage soon. 1200 kms so far and avg'd 11L/100kms. A lot of guys say 9.5-10 easy. My 03 gets 10-11 easily. Auto transmission leaves a bit to be desired. Small hills and it down shifts right away then "over revs" for a long time before it drops down to proper rpm. I really wish it had a manual transmission. My 1990 F150 302 w/ 5spd never needed to downshift on bigger hills and my CTDs don't drop a gear grossing ~20,000lbs up the same hills. I'll be getting a Edge CTS2 to monitor things.

What rear axle gears did you get? You overall gearing is likely way higher than your older trucks.

My ED has 3.55 gears and 265/70R17 tires. Same tires as 03 & 05. They have 3.73 gears. They weigh significantly more. My wife's Durango with 3.6L pentastar doesn't hunt near as bad. It has shorter tires and 3.21 gears.

Still not the same overall ratio. What is your top transmission gear ratio? Is it a 6spd or 8spd? The little ED is probably like a two stroke motorcycle, needs to be up on the "pipe" for any power

My truck has been a bit better as of late. It shifts a bit sooner and holds 8th gear a bit better.

My mods so far, caliper guards, NW seat covers front and rear (provisions for side airbags), Edge Insight CTS2, Leer Canopy, and I think I'm done for now. I hope these add ons don't void the FCA warranty.

Doing an GDE Hot Tune and transmission tune looks intriguing but will have to wait until I decide my warranty is no longer necessary.

Wait until the DOJ reaches the final decision, The longer this takes the More likely the DOJ cases is being under advisement by the court. NOT good for FCA. its still all up in the Air....Also the DOJ/EPA slap cease and desist orders on a Big player in the tuning game, its only time before they do the same to any company that's as grossly negligent as GDE.

I just picked up my new 2017 5 hours ago, it now has 99 miles. 1 impressions are good, we also own a BMW 2015 X5 with the 3.0 turbo diesel, the Ram isn't the same but somewhat close, it drives well, I have been without a Ram diesel now for 4 years, last one was a 2012 3500, a great truck, prior to that 2005 3500 SRW also a great truck, when I sold the dually in 2013 we bought a Diesel pusher, and used my Toyota FJ cruiser as a towed with some modifications, the Toyota recently had a Rat invade the interior on a camping trip and ate a ton of wire the insurance company totaled it, so I found a 2017 Ram 1500 ecodiesel and will be towing that, so I am back to the TDR, never really left since the pusher has a Cummins ISL 400 in it. Interesting about the EPA and the 3.0 engine, last year they went after BMW also and nothing developed, I suspect the same will happen with the 3.0 in the ram trucks
