I also use the band clamps - it doesn't deform the pipe to make it easier to disassemble later. However, if there is a lot of torque on the pipe to make it want to move (twist), it sometimes will not hold it in place. Then I place a small tack weld on the joint, easy to grind off and remove the pipe.

One thing often overlooked when installing band clamps...

It needs to be either oiled or greased. It has to stretch and you will get a far better clamp job if you lube it.

And then don't wonder why it smells like burning oil when you first start the engine!
 
Took advantage of the total washout today and took care of a couple of projects in the houses. The stoves in both houses had burners that we not working. Took them apart and fixed a bunch of broken wires. That fixed all but one. On that stove, it did have a broken wire but I couldn't get the burner to work even after repair.

That stove is a GE Americana from 1966. Believe it or not, the old appliance store in Connellsville, Fayette Appliance, had a new in the box burner for it down in their storeroom. It took the owner a little time to find it but it was there. Said that it had been in inventory for over 30 years. Anyway, brought it home and wired it in and all is working 100%.

I thought your “old store” story was neat and that’s something that’s just about impossible nowadays, but I am curious about what that site says.
We have a Kenmore electric dryer at the shop that’s about 30-35 years old, and we can’t find a timer for it no way, no how.

jgillott. I like doing business around your part of the world. The area seems like it’s full of nice folks. I bought my PJ from Fayette Trailers. They were very helpful with specs and special ordering before a dime exchanged hands. Everyone from that area I had contact with on my trip to pick it up was very pleasant. I still buy what few parts I need from Fayette even though I have a dealer 30 minutes from me. The local farmers like doing business in Pa also. There’s several large dealers that have a big Internet presence that the guy who bought my 3rd gen goes to at least once a year.

I really appreciate that. We still have quite a great community and some really good local business in place. It reminds you of going back in time in some of these places. But with that comes incredible customer service.
 
I'm anal about maintenance and about doing a job right....but....apparently not the dealer tech. As some know, I had a "service 4wd" message when traveling to/from AZ. Got it fixed at dealer (replaced the axle disconnect motor). I checked fluids before the next trip to the TDR rally - had a fair amount of metal dust on the fill plug magnet - hmmm - no chunks - could that be normal for the AA axle? Wiped it off, topped off fluid (was just below min - should have been another sign the tech never checked fluid). Last week, checked fill plug - lots more dust and some chunks - GREAT! :mad: Pulled axle disconnect and LOTs of chunks/dust in there.

Kept fluid and towels with the metal to show dealer. It is now at the dealer for them to "fix"....sigh. Probably won't even flush it, will just say it is fine.

Looks like when the axle disconnect failed, it allowed the collar to rub. That is my guess.

So, how bad are the bearings, will they even check? What will they do? If repaired, do they own a torque wrench? Unfortunately I'm not being sarcastic - a serious question with what they have done wrong so far:
- this issue.
- not centering the steering wheel when doing the V06 welding.
- overfilling trans by 2 quarts when replacing recall for servo pack.
- Not even cleaning off the frame from trans fluid being drained all over it.
- incorrect routing of the fan clutch wiring after water pump recall.

Unfortunately, how often do we here stories like this concerning techs doing substandard work or at least sloppy/careless work. On one hand, having a modern vehicle under warranty is nice not having to pay when things go wrong. However, it is also gratifying to complete work ourselves so that we know it is done to our satisfaction

It's too bad that these things keep getting more and more complex as time goes on. I still like having the ability to work on things myself to avoid these situations. How long we will be able to continue that is unknown however.
 
Hmmm just found out the dealer isn't sure if what metal particles are there is normal - so they have contacted someone to find out how much is "normal". Hmmm - instills confidence that they know what they are doing. Metal grit and small pieces isn't normal...

Guess we'll see....
 
The 2 times Midnite went in for cooling system issues, it came back with an empty burp tank. I had to twist arms twice just to get it to the add mark. Meanwhile they’re scared to do a job that they’re not getting paid on.
