Removing Dents

Buying a used lift

Amazing that there is so much copper in your houses plumbing.

YEARS ago black pipe was typically used. Then that was changed to copper. Then for a while some used Quest (the grey stuff in my photo), that lost out to PEX (due to lawsuits from leaking - mostly at the plastic joints).

Nowadays PEX seems to be mostly what is used in new construction around here due to cost and ease of install. Also very popular to be used for in-floor heating - either under the wood or in concrete - wish I had that in my garage!

What are you use to "seeing"?

I remember when I was a kid helping my dad remove the black pipe (iron) and replacing it with copper in the old farm house. That house was built in the early 1700's. No idea when the pipe was added. All the pipe in the house was cast iron or iron. And all of it was corroding/rusting shut.

Interesting, we had hot dipped steel pipes in the past and then some 30 years ago they switched to convoluted plastic lines within the brick/concrete walls or to crimped stainless steel pipes were they are visible.

The line that I'm having trouble with is that heavy copper. This house also has the electric service entrance grounded to the copper pipes instead of a ground rod. This is the line it is tied to.

Coincidence?

The grounding goes like this. Ground Rod, water pipes and gas if there.

I was seeing some drops under my '07 and I was thinking that my rear seal was leaking again.

To my pleasant surprise, it's between the transmission and transfer case. I'm not going to get into it tonight, but that is so much better than that rear seal.

I’m not much of a plumber so last time around I went Pex. My only complaint is the fittings reduce the effective pipe diameter. Next time I’ll run 1” instead of 3/4 feeders.

Since I'm going to do an entire new run up to my kitchen for the sink and dishwasher which feed off the same lines, what size would you recommend?

My main is 1” and pretty much stays that as it runs down the sill. It might go down to 3/4” for the kitchen/ backyard hose bib.

OK, a couple of updates.

It looks like the trans leak is out of the shifter boot gasket. I changed it out in the fall when the new clutch went in. Apparently leaking again. Coming directly out of the top of the trans and down both sides. I just ordered another one. No sense taking the console out until I have one in hand.

Secondly, I have another pipe leak. This is #4. You just can't make this stuff up.

You are certainly correct. I have some vacation time coming up in June. If I can keep this going until then, I'm going to replace that entire section with Pex and then have the ceiling redone.

One of the few lessons I’ve finally come to understand about plumbing is if you have to touch it while doing a repair, you need to buy a new one. Every pipe, valve, drain, or faucet I’ve ever tried to save always failed and cost me extra time and money.

Yeah plumbing is replace everything unless it is fairly new.

I'm usually right up on my vehicle maintenance, take care of a vehicle and it will take care of you....etc..

But after a whacked out year of drama, deaths and other things I find that I am behind on care and feeding of my vehicles...

Pulled the wifes van in for a service, thought it sounded a little ratty when I started it. 3.3 L with 112,000 miles on it.....sitting in it listening and I also hear a noise in the front heater blower motor.....
Dig out my records......somehow it never has had a spark plug change...good place to start as any....
Bought plugs for that (bought the OEM spec, why wouldn't I) and will change those today...

Car sounded ratty on a cold start last week, dug out the records that came with it and guess what?? That's never had spark plugs either!!! 105,000 miles and 12 years old.....bought plugs for that too and will change them today as well. At least those have a 100,000 mile change interval....
Will take longer than the van as I have to remove some stuff to get the rear plugs out.

I am ashamed that I missed that but one can only deal with and do so much....

You just need a good helper to help stay caught up!

service 4wd.JPG

This showed up on my way to AZ to deal with my brother's estate and drag his stuff back across the country. Couldn't find anything visable to show an issue so I just kept driving since I didn't have much of a choice. The indicator light would go off at times and then back on.

When I got back home I tried to put it in 4wd - it went in fine and wouldn't go back into 2wd - so it was towed to the dealer. Hopefully they have it fixed by this weekend so I can get the camper ready for the TDR rally. Sigh....always something....

Luckily it is still under warrranty till Aug.

Do you guys have a recommendation for a 4" exhaust clamp? I heard some rattling from under my '07 when towing last weekend and this is what I found when I crawled under it just now.

The pipe is 304 stainless and still perfect. The clamps, well not so much.
