5.9L 555 vs 600 Cummins - trade-offs?

I would take the 4500 any day.

Dave

For shifting I agree, but even my dad prefers my 5600 for towing... he thought his 4500 was "the bomb", until he towed with the extra gear of my 5600.

He towed one of my 74 PWs home with his truck... later we towed it to its new owner with my truck... even with the added weight of the bigger trailer and bed full of parts, the 5600 just towed it easier!

Heh. I'm at 1,100 Pounds at the wheels personally...

For heavy towing I LOVE the 6-speed. Also, for those with stacks it really completes the big rig sound with a 400-600RPM every gear drop, if you get the go pedal correctly, you can make the Cummins rev up at the same rate in every gear...

Referring to NV4500:

I wonder what would happen if we would run the same lube in a 5600??

Bad things... most that run a 75w90 in their 5600 report nasty things happening...

Remember, the NV5600 has brass over steel synchronizers, wheres the NV4500 has a fiber synchronizer.

I haven't read all of this thread just some of it. But anyway. Getting rid of my 05 with the 5600 and getting the auto was the best move I ever made. My 07 has 13500 miles and about 11K of that has been towing between 10 and 12k on the goose neck. No regrets. To heck with all that shifting.

I would not own a dodge-spec'd auto after owning my 99... doesn't matter if it is a 89REFJFDG, its still a dodge-spec'd auto. If I could kill a 47RE with zero towing and a stock engine, I doubt a 48RE would fair me very well either.

I wouldn't own a 6. 7L with some of the things I've read, so I'm out on the Aisen too...

I'll probably rebuild this trans if it ever gives mechanical trouble... or swap in a G56.

I thought you were the adventurous one? Running 50 weight oils, seeing how many teeth you could break off... you just hit me as that type??

I'm starting to think one could throw just about anything in there and it won't make any difference. Some work some don't. Some last forever, some break gears. Doesn't seem to be any one 'best fit" answer.

Lucky I have a 1200# transmission jack... ;)

When I pulled my 5600 for the clutch upgrade, There were no transmission jacks locally available in a size suitable for the transmission - but a biker neighbor had a 1500 lb capacity motorcycle hoist i bought that worked perfectly after I fabricated a wooden cradle for the 5600 - best $35 I ever spent...

So where's the specs on the wooden cradle Gary? Sears has the motorcycle jacks on sale every so often for $59.

I just made a cardboard pattern that conformed to the lower front and rear of the transmission where I wanted it supported, then cut a pair of 2/6's to match, and secured them to the lift plate of the hoist. Those type hoists are quite low, so easily fit under the truck - and as long as they're used on a smooth floor, also easily allow transmission movement.

It will be a while before I experiment with the ATF, but I doubt making things thinner will work in this trans base on my experiences...

I think I might actually look at one of three synchromesh fluids... BG makes one, Torco makes one, and GM has a "friction modified" synchromesh (in addition to their "normal" synchromesh). I like the idea of using synthetics for the protection, but they can't be protecting to good on gear clashes...

I have heard good results with the Torco fluid... but its hard to find!

I replaced Redline MTL with Torco RTF and I couldn't tell any difference betweent the two.

I been looking really hard at the motorcycle lifts myself for a trans jack. . as I wanted a low cradle big truck style jack and they are $$$$$$ but a atv / mototcyle jack looks decent. . I assume they went high enough to remove the trans. . how high did the truck have to be to get trans in and out under the chassis on the jack and cradle? any pics. . ? I hope to do my G56 1gen swap this spring. .

thanks
