I have a trans. temp. gauge I want to install in the hot line where the present factory temp. sender is located.
1. Will it hurt anything to remove this unit and leave it unplugged?
2. If so, what do I do? Can I leave the wiring harness plugged in to the gauge and just tape it under my truck?

Big John, Since the ECM monitors the transmission temps, I do not think it would be a good idea to leave unplugged.

Make sure you use a gauge that has the correct scale for the trans temp. I don't know what you are going to use, but the Westach gauges start at about 50 deg and go up to 350. Uusually the normal temps will run in the 150-175 range. When I did mine, I got an extra sensor, and put it in the port at the top of the engine oil filter housing, ran both through an "on-on" toggle switch, and can check temps of both eng. oil & and trans fluid, with just the one gauge... . Get yourself a 3/8 npt female pipe T, then get two 3/8 male pipe to 1/2 inch compression fittings, assemble them with the sender in the side port and the compression fittings in the ends, measure twice and cut once, the hot line going over to the heat exchanger, strip the paint off the lines for the compression fittings and assemble.

Good luck

I replaced all my tubing some months ago with 1/2" stainless steel tubing. I can put a tee in anywhere along the line. I guess I did not phrase my question right. If I unplug the present temp. sender will it affect my truck? What will it do? If so, can I overcome this somehow? I would like to have only one temp. sender, if possible.

Thanks--------John

I did see this in the service manual. -- The overdrive will be defeated until the temperature in the trans comes up to 50F ?????. It may put it into lockup if too hot also(not sure). What signal it will get unplugged I don't really know. May generate a DTC or you may be in permanent limp home mode.

The computer monitors the temp, if out of range, no lock up or OD.
You can defeat it by going to radio shack and buying a resistor that will put the return voltage in range of normal operation temps.
solder it in the harness and you will be all set.
