Hello,

Just placed a order for some Alcoa M/T Challenger wheels from National Tire and Wheel and I think I need to call them back and change something. He asked if I wanted long center caps or standard ones up front? He said the Dana 80 rear-end required long caps and that the front didn't. I told him standard up front. So my caps in the back are gonna be longer than the ones in the front. Seems to me this is gonna look silly now that I think about it. Does the rear in fact need longer caps and if so what looks better, having longer caps on all four wheels or putting standard length caps up front? I need to call him back quickly so I would appreciate any help.

Thanks a million,

Thanks

I guess I'm trying the long ones all around. My salseman was gone when I called back so I have to call him monday morning and change the fronts to the long ones. I sure wish these guys knew what they were doing so I didn't have to guess. Thanks for the help Bob.

Ray, I've got a customer with MT's and he took off the deep centers, and put the factory RAM centers on. This looks very nice, too.

I will try and get a picture on Monday when I see him again.

Long Or Short??

I run tall caps on both of mine,,You ask if it will look awkward the other way and I say no,,The time I seen the Feared "White Dodge"(Mitchell's Beast) he had the Eagle Alloys and short caps on it in the front,,Like the cleaner look so my next set will do the same

Ray,

I've have these rims, and I got the centers that MT outlines for our trucks. Seems to me like it has 25 somewhere in the P/N.

I did this at all four corners, and I think it is the same for the Dana 80's as it is for the 70's. Kinda pricey for a center cap. The first time that I went to a local car wash, I about had a corinary as a local illegal used it as a footstep to wipe the hood off with, and then again to climb into the bed. AARRGGG!!

Seemed to hold up ok though, so WTF.

Verdict

Well, it seems that my 2002 truck takes short (standard) caps all the way around. I got the long ones for the rear and the short ones for the front but the short work fine on the rear. Called national wheel and tire and they are sending me out two short caps for the rear.

Thanks for all the help,

ya got me

I still don't know what causes you to need to long ones so I can't answer if there was a change or not. All I know is that standard short cap fits over the rear just fine. If I could see a 2001 rear end I'd be able to tell if it changed.

is this normal?

Am I being to picky? I had the new wheels installed today and they dinged up and dented (slightly dented) each center cap with the torque wrench as they tightened each lugnut. Now I have eight small dented/scratched areas on the end of each cap. Should I complain about this or is this normal? For what I paid for these things it seems that there would be NO damage during install.

When I was a mechanic it was nearly a death sentence to scratch even a used center cap, much less a new one:mad: . If the room is tight between the cap and lug nut they need to use a standard socket instead of the impact socket and yes a small extension is usually needed. Glad to hear they are actually hand-torqueing the lug nuts though, too few places(people) actually do that.
