I need some help,

Found out today that my muffler output collar rusted thru and left my tailpipe disconected. Was having my truck inspected for the annual NYS Diesel Emission / Safety check. How embarassing ???

3 inch Tailpipe is still like new, as well as 4 inch? pipe from the Cat. I either need an exact fit replacement muffler only or a new cat back system (4 inch high flow?). I did do a search, all are from turbo back, cutting out the cat, no can do for me. Are there any simple mail order type places that can get me what I need and still leave me a happy customer. ?

Thanks,

Ron

Walker has a 4" cat back. There www is walker mufflers or walker exhaust - something like that. Get their phone# and call. Ask for their performance reps to get info on nonstock stuff. Craig

Most of the auto parts places around here have the DynoMax (Walker) systems for around $300. It's cat back, 4" with hangers and a shiney tip.

Do a search for TDR member rrook. I bet he could help you with your problem. It is my understanding he does mail order exhaust.

mufler?

Ron,

Whats up long time no see. Lose the cat, you'll pass inspection , call me up and We'll talk, I'm real close to losing the muffler altogether. Sounds much better.

I just replaced my muffler with a Geno muffler replacement kit, it has a 4" adapter and you keep your pipe out of the muffler. Just the Muffler is replaced. I don't think the noise is that much loader but it sounds better!

Mufflers?? We don't need no steeenking mufflers!!!:D

My muffler has been relocated to where it belongs - on the scrap steel pile. Truck is much happier.

Check out the Walker stuff

You might want to try out a 4" Walker tailpipe(P/N 54150). They can be had for $40-$55. The tailpipe is about a foot too short, so a chrome extension would look correct on it. Right now, Walker has a $20 rebate on a 4" straight-through Ultra Flo welded muffler for the Dodge Ram (P/N 17537). It costs around $100 before rebate, and has a lifetime limited warranty. You can check it out here:http://www.dynomax.com/default.htm. I installed both the muffler and tailpipe, and like the sound. I made my own hangers up using 4" muffler clamps and 3/8" cold rolled steel rod. Just figured I'd give you another option to check out:)

Replace the entire system with a 4" and save the head ache of trying to reuse the old parts. They don't cost much more than a cat back system and can improve performance.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought diesels do not have catalytic convertors. It has a resonator for sound and a muffler for sound deadening. This is why they both hit the scrap pile the first week I owned truck. Ah the sound!

Here are a few other muffler options:

Walker 21468 - 3" in an out $60 and you get a $20 rebate. This is a little larger muffler so is should not result in too much noise.

Walker 21471 - 4" in an out, like the 21468 only in a 4" version. Around $100 at Napa. Also a $20 rebate.

Dynomax 17223 - Like the 21468 only smaller and for that reason it will be a little louder. I think it's about $60 or $70 at Summit Racing. Also a $20 rebate.

Dynomax 17225 - It is similar to the 21471 , but it is smaller an again therefore louder. This is what I have on my truck. I do not think it is too loud, but my father tells me he can hear me leave his sub division (about 1/2 mile from his house) when I stand on it :)

These are all straight though mufflers (like all of the Dynomax Ultra Flow Mufflers). Any competent muffler shop should be able to fit any one of these up for you.

kaptn - Some diesels do have catalytic converters. I think the 24 valve engines did not require them, and possibly the 1st generation of the 12 valve.

My 96 has a Cat. It may not for long, if the Reddog1 gets after it :D .

If you include the pherds and shivies as diesels, I don't have a clue if they have Cats.

Just a note - this is the same tail pipe I have on my first gen. It fits great, has mandrel bends and gets rid of the "crunched" bend over the axle that the factory put in the first gens. As johnrv4 mentioned it is short to allow for a tip to be installed. I added a Magnaflow 5" stainless tip. My pipe came from NAPA, but I believe Summit has Walker parts too.
