Hey Guys,

Now that I have started to bomb my engine, I plan on buying a set of gauges. I know that I am going with Auto Meter Pro-Comp series. I know that I want a 60 psi boost gauge, and a Pyro Gauge, but I am undecided on a third gauge. I don’t think a trans temp gauge is necessary since I have a manual box and don't do a lot of towing. So I am stuck between an oil temp gauge or a fuel pressure gauge. Does anybody know which gauge is more useful, and easier to install. Also, I am given a choice to get electronic or mechanical gauges. Which one works better? Thanks for any help.

I have fuel pressure in both my trucks even my 12v. It is use full to know when to change a fuel filter or a overflow valve dying. Plus I had a fuel pump fail a few months ago It was nice to know why I was getting a stumble.

I can tell you a transmission temp gauge in a manual is a pretty boring proposition. I vote for a 2nd pyro so you can watch cooldown temps and manifold temps. Or you could put in one of the electronic combo gauges so it could register the maximum readings and give you a warning. Just a couple of thoughts.

It would be a mistake not to have an FP gauge especailly w/ the PE Comp. You'll be glad you put it in when your lift pump craps out on you.

Tim,

This is a 12V, so it doesn't have the same lift pump issues the 24V does.

Brandon,

I just run the boost and pyro in mine. Never really figured out what to use for a third gauge. I was thinking of a second pyro, though. I use the DiProcol. They work pretty good for me. They are mechanical.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I have made up my mind. I decided to install both a fuel pressure gauge and an oil temp gauge. I am going to install an under-the-hood fuel pressure gauge, and would like to mount it on top of the fuel filter at the 1/8 NPT fitting. My only question is what gauge to use. I read the TST adapter is only good for temporary use, and I want a permanent gauge. Would that liquid gauge from Grainger (PN 5HK52) work as a permanent gauge?

I have decided to install an Autometer electric oil temp gauge. My question is where to hook it up to the engine, and what size fitting it should be. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't install a gauge right on top of the filter via the TST adaptor. The screw size is less than 1/4'' plus it has a hole in it. With the weight of a gauge on it the vibration would likely break it off. You can use a grease gun hose from the adaptor to the gauge to isolate it from vibrations. You will also need either a gauge snubber of needle valve to dampen pulsations or the gauge will self destruct in no time.

This is the gauge I use 5HK52 60lb gauge and this is the needle valve

You can save yourself $25 by just tapping the head of the injection pump inlet banjo bolt to 1/8'' NPT and using it for the connection. More room to work and plus you will still be able to use your bleed screw easily.
